I have thought about creating a free blog and using one of my domain names as the URL, then putting adsense adverts on the blog, along with a line at the bottom of the posts saying this URL is for sale if you are interested please get in touch.

It seems to me you may get just a many clicks as on a parking page, if not more given that you can promote your blog. Does anybody know if it's against any arcane adsense rule or regulation that says you can't advertise your domain name on your blog ?

I'm pretty sure it's OK. As long as you follow their general guidelines (no more than 3 ad blocks/page) you should be fine.

Thanks - at the moment I have put the domain back with Bodis, as it was getting no traffic anyway :(

You can use blogger.com and write some article about your domains for sale. Using adsense on such sites is no problem as long as you adhere to their rules. In my opinion, if you have good adsense placement, you can definitely earn more than just parking. Plus, you will soon get indexed and if you have even 20 good keyword rich lines on your blog, you will get some decent traffic flowing in.
