For me to buy online keeps me off the road running from store to store reducing my emmisions. In a lot of cases the items arrive in hand delivered mail otherwise they are dropped off by a vehicle making other stops along the way.
Regardless of the distribution point semi trailer traffic is involved whether it goes to the post office or an individual store.If anything, there is an additional drop made to a department store depot for distribution to individual stores.
An "extreme case scenario" would be the situation that everything we purchased would be mail ordered. Millions of cars would be off the road and store parking lots empty. They would be replaced by a smaller fleet of delivery trucks making frequent stops.
