Owners renewing after the auction

It's happened a few times now. I pick up a domain at auction for very cheap. A couple of days later, GoD emails that the owner renewed. I can see that happening if the auction closed very high, but why would someone pay the $80 penalty to renew a domain that sold for a cheap $25.

Ironically enough, this never happened for a domain that closed high. Recently bought a domain for $600 and was sure the owner will renew, but no, he let it slip.

I have a feeling that for domains closing in auction for less than $80, GD emails the owner to let them know that someone else bought it, because the $80 penalty fee is higher than the auction price. For domains closing over $80, they don't let them know because they want to keep the $600 or whatever it closed at.

Any info on this?

when bidding on pending delete names, there's always that chance

then too, if an owner checks and see's bids on a name they planned to drop, maybe they have second thoughts

or they got an offer on the name, after it expired, and the diff between GD fee versus profit from sale is greater.

Really... It sort of makes sense. I sense a great deal of corruption in all this!

Right, Pending Delete domains actually drop.

The issue here is pre-release domains.

There are several venues auctioning domains while the original registrant still has the ability to renew them.

There are ways to avoid the $80 redemption fee. I see it happen all the time with GoDaddy auctions.

I know some registrars don't have the $80 fee. You're saying it can be avoided at GD too? How?

Sure. There is a loophole in the system where you can transfer an expired domain out.
I see people do it frequently.

I've had "expired" domains of mine sell at auction below $80, and I have never once gotten an email from GD that someone bought it.

sorry, was thinking about "redemption-reactivation" period.

"pre-release" stage is correct
