Recently I bought a bunch of domains (some handreg, some closeouts) with the idea to do outbound. For some of my names I already have a few perfect matches lined up.

However, I'm holding off to start sending the emails because of the reg lock. I'm afraid buyers won't understand what's going on and feel taken advantage off. I also don't want to mention the reg lock in the possible negotiations. They might think I'm a scammer.

Yet I see sales passing here and there where the hold time is literally a few days. And they did outbound. I've got no idea how that works. The buyer pays but needs to wait weeks to show up in his account?

Please vote and chime in if you (successfully) outbounded within the first 60 days.

you tell them to create an account at your registrar and push the name there

A transfer lock should never have an impact on a sale because it is not relevant to the sale. Just like expiry date. Amongst domain name investors, who have very particular registrar preferences and renewal expectations, things like a transfer lock and expiry date may matter, but they do not matter to end users.

All transactions with an end user should be conducted via an intermediary (e.g: Afternic, Atom, DomainEasy, Sedo, Escrow.com) to protect both the buyer and seller. The payment should have cleared (with the intermediary) before the domain is transferred, at which point, you transfer the domain to the intermediary by pushing to their account at your registrar. The intermediary closes out the sale by transferring the domain to the buyer, and releases payment to you. The transfer between the intermediary and the buyer is not a blocker to the sale, it is something dealt with after the sale, and whether it involves a push or cross-registrar transfer is not material.

Personally, i keep a spreadsheet and wait the 60-days before outbounding. However, If they have an account or willing to open a free account at the same registrar your domain is managed at, then you can generally push between accounts during the 60-days.

What ever you wish to pitch and works, is what you stick with.
