Outbound campaign to non-profits

Hey NP,

I registered both the .com and .org for H/a/r/b/o/r/S/h/i/e/l/d recently and am researching some potential end users. There are a few actual businesses I could target, but the majority of potential end users would likely be non-profits, which is the primary reason I also registered the .org extension. Does anyone have experience specifically targeting non-profits in an outbound email campaign?

The obvious drawback I can see is a limited budget on behalf of the organization, but I'm also concerned with how my emails would be perceived i.e. someone trying to make a buck off of a charity. Just wanted to get some opinions on this since I can't seem to find any outbound threads specifically related to non-profits.

Thanks,

With regard to charitable credentials, I take the term 'non-profit' with a pinch of salt nowadays. All it means is that they aren't seen to make a profit. Many executives at 'non-profit' organisations make serious amounts of money from their positions. It's big business. They shouldn't be averse to spending a few quid on a domain.

@cooljub Very true. Goodwill Industries is probably a classic example of a non-profit with executives that are pretty well compensated.

In my case, do you think its better to try and present the .com or .org extension up front in my initial email? Or, offer them up front as a package deal? I was almost thinking of starting with the .com (unless their current extension is .org) and seeing if there's interest thus reserving the .org name as leverage in the negotiations should it get to that point. Thoughts...?

Non profits I classify as large groups.
Services support and community 2-5 people running, their budget is probably 100-200 for a domain name. ie. An Asian Center.
Larger services and support community group 5-12 people, their budget is 500 max.
For groups of 100 or above you can do $1,000 USD or more.

Like the National Association for ....
Its best to look at the 1)Size and 2)Look at their advertising campaign, do they advertise on TVs? Newspapers? What kind of Newspapers or TVs

There you have it, small and 0 budget or big and actively advertising group. One group the Universities and Colleges, they get, asked, but never give back or care to advertise. Just my opinion

Based off of recent sales I was thinking of asking for $1995 for the .com and $1295 for the .org so some target organizations might be Ocean Conservancy and Oceana. Have to definitely do some more research and see there are some businesses that would have use for the domain as well. Ideally I'd like to get closer to mid $x,xxx.

I'm only learning so I'm not sure, but as .org is most suitable for the public face of a non-profit, I think I'd present the .org and say the .com comes with it. But I really don't know about outbound or negotiations. Hopefully some more experienced members can help.
