As many here are already aware I have a portfolio of over 2500 names - BUT - now that we are working hard on development - really need to reduce that number to around the 20 mark.

NOTE - QUALITY not quantity should be the keyword for any new members reading this.

The present dilemma is simple. Do I spend resources selling names at a time when we are busy building our main TV site, do I sit on the names constantly renewing and waiting for offers, do I let those that need renewing lapse, do I get someone else to sell my portfolio for a cut, do I set up a small development template and make micro-sites, or do I do nothing whatsoever? This is the developers dilemma and I would be keen on hearing the views of others.

I've tried a couple of things (not too much because we are supposed to be working on developing one name - not spending our lives selling old stock).
The upshot of this is that just when I thought that the names I'd bought over many months were beginning to show signs of 'bad purchasing decision' in the first place up pops my fairy Godmother with her SEDO magic.

Out of nowhere I've received a $439 (£250) offer for one of my names.

I'd like to think it is an offer from outside this forum - and even though it is a very small amount for a quality name - it does show that it is pointless wasting time worrying about whether people will be interested or not in your collection.

A good name is a good name - and I'm happy that from nowhere - someone else in the world agrees with me and is prepared to buy that name to make their dream come true.

Congrats on the offer :notme:

Regards your bulging portfolio.
I think you know you need to trim it down & get rid of the poorer quality so id try sell anything off that you wont use just through forums / auctions for anything you can get.

Go through your domains and selct ONLY your top domains or domains you see most potential for, you will need to be very strict if you want to avoid massive renewal bills.
I'd seriously think twice about owning many Premiums over $1K a year as they get harder to make a profit on every time you need to renew. Think of a number in your head that you would be happy to pay each year to renew your portfolio then start trimming down to leave just the top domains with reasonable domains.

I like you had thought about building small mini sites for some of my domains just to bring in a few $$'s & some traffic but i've came to the decision that there is better ways to spend your time & effort. I would only spend my time on my top domains, forget anything else but your prime business for now & slowly sell of the rest.

The idea of hiring a broker to sell some off is good but i have no experience there. The problem with that is that i'd guess you need to come up with a reasonable figure in your head to give the broker a decent chance of selling, your not likely to get the massive end user prices we all dream of. IMHO

Well its better to get offers on names when you think no one wants them, rather than after they expire. Holding 2500 names it too much IMO. In all reality the most domains I can sell in a year is around 70. If you can only sell about 70 per year that leaves 2430 renewals. For me that leaves about 230 renewals. Question is, Does the profit from the 70 sales even cover your other renewals? In my case the sales do cover and exceed my cost per year of renewals. But in your case I find it almost impossible to cover the $60750 per year of renewals (not including any premiums), I cant imagine that your sales revenue could eclipse this cost in any potential sitiuation. You would have to sell at least 60 $1000 names per year just to cover cost, that is a difficult feat.

I think you are going to learn that alot of buyers watch the expiration dates closely and you will get alot of offers after they expire as they think you have renewed it, Most buyers dont realize that your name is reflected on the whois, over a month after expiration, they get anxious as they cant tell if it is expired or if you still own it, generally causing them to send you an email via whois. I cant tell you how many names I let expire only to have to buy them back from godaddy at $80 each just to sell them the next day for hundreds.

I wish you luck in selecting the names to keep, its very difficult.
