When my esteemed colleague, the sultan of strategy, and the diligent student of domain profiteering - the venearable SKG, sees the obvious flaws in Demand Medias most recent shennanigans, and does so publically, I cant help but take a step back - and gasp at the ensuing chaos.

SKG has, up until now, been on the QT defending DM - from the point of view that no one should be criticized based on hearsay and/or rumors on a forum……….and not rushing to judgment is something I try and learn from SKG on one of my GOOD days.

It takes a special talent ( or set of tools.. geddit!!) to alienate an existing customer base so completely and Demand Media has proven to themselves and everyone on this board, that they are a class act.

Equity, almost outwitting me in the dry humor department, gave an example of what could happen to someone like Sanchay looking to make a premium purchase……….

“ Hello this is Sanchay I am interested in Surfing.tv What is your bid? $3000. Sorry you were just outbid. By who? No one, actually we just think we can get more out of you…..”

I put it a different way on the 5th April and it is scary how close to the mark I got………. “ " We are continuing to chuckle as we hand out BS to the general public with standardised formulated crap.......at the same time, anyone with deep enough pockets to be suckered into outragous early bird trumped up prices can feel free to see how much they are really prepared to bend over.........…”

I have no agenda. I am not looking to buy any more premiums and certainly have not received any calls, emails or otherwise for the 40 odd names that I had sent the email form into DM……….

I will make do with what I have - which is more than enough. The same however cannot be said to be true for the vast majority on this board who never got to reg a premium during the wonder months of September, October of 2006.

It is these folks who need to make some major decisions as to whther they allow themselves to be held ransom, or buy a premium name in the aftermarket, or avoid premium names altogether and instead concentrate on a superior business plan.

If you fill out the form for a premium name not yet released and you already have a .tv portfolio of premium domain names with eNom/Demand Media, then guess how easy it is for them to discern what you have been willing to pay in the past, how many dot tv names you currently have in your account, and anticipate your strategy based upon the pattern of your previous premium name registrations.

Perhaps you have a few premium names that carry hefty renewals. Perhaps they can eek out some more money from your deep or shallow pockets (depending on how much of your nest egg you blew on premium registrations with the dot tv corporation).

This is possible. Whether they would even go to the trouble is a matter of debate.

Good points all around Millers.

If dot tv is going to be as big as they want everyone to believe and they will be investing millions of dollars into a marketing push and technical support of the .tv premium names, then I would guess that Mr. DM has thought about every possible way to eek out as much money from the buying public as possible.

Well right now is the time to charge forward and tighten up your portfolios.
Some have top names, some have average names which they can work on improving the value in other ways.

Because Rosenblatt is trying to create hype for the .TV extension and by handling the premiums sales this way, it has the potenital to breed a schizophrenic market right from the start.

This could be good or bad, either A. Spin out of control, crash and burn, or B. Create a tidle wave of hype for .TV

I smell hype coming and either way you slice it if you own decent names your names will go up in value.

Yes I know we dont want a bubble, but most people on here at least have one good reg and we are on the good side of the bubble now so lets all be thankful we at least have a piece...

James, thank you for the kind words, but I must say that everyone who participates in threads here at .tv is a pillar, imo. It is a great community and well managed.

In regards to DM, whatever happens will happen and whatever has happened can change. It could be an isolated incident, it could be the new format, or it could be a little beta before the launch to test a model of selling. The truth is that the seller can only sell at a price the market will bear, right. Many names may end up going at reserve and if higher then that is fine too because the market dictated that. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy. We buy or sell on our own will.

Agreed...noone is forcing anyone to buy, I hope that people will buy though, because I do believe that the best outcome for everyone concerned is that names are bought and developed........lets keep our fingers crossed that DM are not too shortsighted to see that a fair pricing model will end up doing the most for .TV , the website owner and DM at the same time.......

Those were some crazy nights! Remember going through every page, letter by letter, googling them, overturing them, wheeling and dealing? LapTops.tv for $150.00? Man were those the days...

I was dead broke during those months, too, unable to reg any of the premiums.

DM will do what they can to maximize their earnings, which is what any company out there wants to do. The way I look at it, it's almost like a horse race, and each one of us is on the track, trying to wait patiently behind the gate, hoping our horse doesn't buck us off before the race begins and the gate opens.

We are worried that some of the other gates will open before ours, but in the end, there's still going to be a lot of track for anyone who wants to run.
