Oh my... I hope to God this is not true. Without bees, we are soooo toast.

Is this a reputable news source BTW? I'm from the US, so I'm not very familiar with "The Independent".

What could sting domainers and prevent the success of Dot Mobi?
A ban of cell phones to stop the loss of bees.
Read the full article here >>> Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?<<<
.

I had previously read about the increased incidence of cancer with cell phone use as described in the article. However, there are numerous scientific studies which suggest that radiation is quickly diminished by merely holding the phone a bit further away from your head...

As for bees, this is the first I've heard of bees and cell phones being correlated... Seems there isn't much evidence on this at the moment, however, if this can be believed to be true, it certainly is a cause for concern!
By the time dotmobi would likely hit prime time (say 5 years from now, should it occur), we probably won't need bees anymore -- perhaps I'm a bit optimistic, however at the pace GM foods are coming along, I wouldn't doubt we'll have a solution to this problem in the near future. For the present time being however, this poses some serious threats should further research solidify these findings... One scientific study isn't earth shattering... Hell it barely does anything to public opinion. I'll be carefully reading up on this, hoping that this is a flawed finding -- it certainly wouldn't be the first.

Either way -- cell phones won't be going anywhere. Perhaps we'll develop phones which are more environmentally friendly, much as we've developed environmentally friendly vehicles, however, I can guarantee you the large majority of the population won't give 2 shits (pardon my language) about bees, much as is the case currently with fuel inefficient vehicles. Whether it be fuel inefficient vehicles or cell phones, most people won't agree to policies put in place to restrict their free will.

the impact can be a domino effect. Man, villages, societies live on foods that can take years for a tree or a plant to mature enough to bear. Bananas, limes, lemons, and many other fruits take 10, 20, 50, or more than a hundred years to produce. Then all the nut families like pecans, walnuts, almonds,. Thinking about that, no modified foods will supply mankind with foods that are nutritous and healthy. No bees, no food. Do you like grapes? It may take ten years to grow replacement genetic modified grapes. Problem is they have plenty of modified corn, grains etc. They just don't have any track record with most food sources we rely on today. If all the grapes could not produce fruit because no bees were around to pollinate, let me tell you a bottle of any kind of wine would be out of a salary of twos budget. The truth is they can replicate grapes by propagation, in greenhouses or other methods. But that still leaves us with the bees not pollinating the grapes buds to make those grapes.

Essential fatty acids and tocopherols are found in foods like avocodos not having those available in the grocery stores can translate to sickness and disease for mankind.

Its interesting how the other animals and insects dependant on honey do not want to consume the honey from bees that are near portable phones. Its too bad our sensors are not as sensitive as found in a honey bee. The thing is though, we have science, but is that science letting us in on the real truth, or is it so, that they are baffled?

Frankly we should not be sitting ducks for cancer or brain tumors and the real truth needs to come out. Maybe then many of us would choose not to have a phone attached to our ears.

Add to that the domino effect when one species perishes leaving no recourse for the dependant species to exist on.

Many nations have one or maybe two major food supplies and those can take up to one hundred years to gain bearing maturity.

This is a big issue. No wonder our governments of the world have been racing to get into space. This planet may need a rest.

I am aware of reports of bee hives collapsing but this is the first I have heard about anything to do with cell phones.

Can never rule out anything. Many firms are in development of newer, longer lasting, less lethal batteries. Otherwise, try convincing the 3.5 billion cell phone users in the world to toss their phones away.

Wishing anyone the best on that one :hehe:

Seeing as at least half the people I know don't give a damn whether the food they like has trans fat in it or not -- something which has been proven to have detrimental health effects, I don't think an increased risk of cancer or dead bees are going to be of any concern to this ignorant, overwhelming majority... Maybe that'll benefit us domainers with a stake in dotmobi :) And yes, I'm fully aware that I have no conscience :tu:

everything about the article is scary, not just the bee thing, but tumour thing too.
they are just theories at present though.
about the independant, yes it is imo the best newspaper in the UK.
The only papers worth reading are the times, independant, observer & guardian.
The rest are toilet paper.

If it turns out to have a shred of correlation I wouldn't be surprised if the issue is simply the radio frequencies being used in cell phones. I doubt there has been many studies about the effects of RF spectrums on animals much beyond the cooking properties of radio waves in high concentrations. Just outside our audible range is a world of sound inhabited by insects and bats. It's actually quite loud at night if we could hear it.

Lots of work though has been done to study the effects of microwave radiation on people due to the common use of the kitchen appliance. Labs have been baking rats for many years trying to evaluate the effects of exposure and they have not found much with low level exposure.

Safety issues regarding RF exposure around broadcast antennas are quite serious though.

Google the following for some interesting reading.

-antenna radiation burns
-radiofrequency radiation
-rf burns

Would cell phones be banned as a result of bee problems? Probably not. More likely would be the elimination of cell towers in agricultural areas and an auto off feature when a phone is in a certain proximity.

The scientists---

I think the scientists looking into this bee radiation thing should turn their sites to the number one killer of bees----Tracheal mites and other external parasites. These little boogers are decimating the contained and feral bee hives alike all over the Western Hemisphere to the tune of 600-800 million in fifteen years. There has been little progress made offering limited protection.

I highly doubt cell phones are in the top five when it comes to culprits regarding the health of bees IMHO.

Too nice outside----Goin' fishin' !!

Wow, I didn't really expect such a comprehensive, knowledgeable discussion about this topic. You guys really know your bee stuff.

I posted this mostly tounge-in-cheek because I wanted to get a jump on those who usually post the next reason why dot mobi is doomed. The cell phone - brain cancer scare has been bandied about for years. Now this.

And like most published news items about scientific or medical studies, a new one comes out every day, and it is often contradicted by the next study that comes out after it. Statistics and data can be manipulated to fit the target conclusion of a study.

In this case, it does seem far-fetched that cell phones can be responsible for such a decimation in bee populations. So many of those agricultural areas where bees are used to pollinate crops are so remote from city centers. I'm more likely to agree with nsane's point about the mites or other biological causes of this bee problem.

What about the increase in solar activity and magnetic fluctuations. I think I've seen articles about the magnetic poles being in flux, and if used for navigation by bees, that might explain bee-waggle-dance-direction confusiuon.
