Obtaining an Expired/Expiring Domani

I have been searching everywhere for a recent answer to this question.

I have been following a domain with Tucows, which is expiring. What should I do to obtain this domain?

Is NameJet the best way possible? I read somewhere that all tucows domains where going to namejet. But that article was over a year old so I don't know if it is still valid.

I am willing to spend the extra $60 or whatever. Is there anyway I don't get a chance at the domain if I backorder it there?

Also, how long does this process take? If I backorder it at namejet, how many days after the domain expiration date on the whois would it take?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Ok, so I've backordered the domain on namejet.

Is there anyway I wouldn't get a chance to buy/bid on this domain? Assuming the original owner doesn't renew it.

What is the expiry date?
Backorder at snapnames. It should appear there with a date next to it. Never backorder any domain if you don't see any date next to it when you search it at snapnames or namejet. Both namejet and snapnames allow you to backorder any domain including google.com and yahoo.com but they don't have a date next to them. Seeing a date in search results is critical.

I think the domain will be on snapnames between day 25 and 42 after expiry. It will not drop. This is a pre-release auction. You should see the same domain on my site as well when it goes to auction with a link to the correct auction site.

Hi Erdinc,

Thanks for your response. I don't understand one thing though. Should I backorder at snapnames and namejet? I already backordered at namejet because I read somewhere that they have exclusive rights to Tucows expiring domains.

Whois says the domain expired a day ago. But they still have the listing details.

Tucows domains go directly to snapnames. No other auction site has any chance. They changed to snapnames a while ago.

Examples:
https://www.snapnames.com/domain/triends.com.action
https://www.snapnames.com/domain/clan4all.com.action

The domain will be on snapnames between day 25 and 42 after expiry. Currently you can not see any listing details on snapnames or namejet. The only criteria that counts is the date.

search for this on snapnames and you will see a date:
triends.com

1. cancel namejet
2. wait until day 25 and go to snapnames and check if you see the date. if yes place a backorder

Erdinc, thanks for the useful advice.

I'm trying to grab a NamesDirect domain which expired recently. I placed a backorder on SnapNames even though there wasn't a date listed yet; should I cancel and wait for the date to pop up, or am I fine?

Edit: The domain expired 3 days ago.

Hi thesq,

Here is what I suggest to do:

1. Remove the backorder

2. On the 26.th and 30.th day after expiry search on both snapnames and namejet. If you see a date on one of the sites, that domain will be auctioned on that site and nowhere else. So place a backorder. You will get the domain around day 42 and 45.

3. If you didn't see a date for some reason you missed the first auction (the pre-release auction). Now you can try to catch the domain during pending delete. Wait until day 47 and check the whois. If according the whois the domain was not renewed then go to the next step.

However there is something tricky here. You must not trust the whois if you checked it earlier. It will show the domain as renewed but later it will change back again as not renewed. In other words, check the whois indeed on day 47 and not earlier for any domain that you hope to catch during pending delete. This is related to verisign's free auto renewal.

4. Backorder the domain at snapnames. The domain will drop and snapnames is better than anybody else catching drops. Around day 70 the domain should enter pending delete. If this happens again you will see a date on snapnames search results. If nothing happens until day 80 remove the backorder.

Oh wow, the domain already has a date listed next to it, and it's still early in the redemption period. Should I still wait until the 26th/30th day to discourage counter-bidders, or should I just bid ASAP?

If you see a date then you can place a bid. However I would wait until that day and place a bid on that day.

So now a whois for the domain I am after says it is at
NS1.RENEWYOURNAME.NET

What does this mean?

I removed the backorder. Now comes the waiting game until day 25. Thanks for all your help.
