My thoughts exactly. So glad you were able to set that up with relative ease. It seems possible that the process could be developed for even more ease of use.

The problem isnt setting it up, the problem is using it as a domain.... Nobody is going to add the extension to their browser to access your website.... Humans are lazy....

The only way for alt TLDs to work is if the extension needed was already attached to browsers by default.

Just to clarify, normally you would change your local DNS settings to point to OpenNIC servers rather than installing a browser plugin. Then ALL of your software will recognize the alternate domains (including browsers, email, and other services). I'm honestly not sure who wrote that blockchain plugin or if it's still being maintained.

Or are you using the term Alternative only for Epik alternative domain spaces? @Rob Monster

The names that we did register will continue to resolve across our network. We reserve the right to re-open those name spaces at a time of our choosing.

And, what OpenNIC can't do that Epik does?

Could I use a dedicated server as well? What are the requirements in terms of storage, memory, cores? Raspberry alike?

We talk about alternate root namespaces here, not about other stuff like CDN and/or Kubernetes hosting etc.

What kind of value is being added or will be added to them for commercing?

What I feel is these would never popularize and be viable, unless popular DNS servers start resolving these TLDs -

If at least one popular browser, like Opera provides native support (i.e. resolve these TLDs by default), it can get popular

If you are someone from OpenNIC, I have few questions: how do you prevent your community members running Tier 2 DNS servers from snooping onto my DNS lookups, can I trust them?

Your DNS servers are pathetically slow, and i can't even stream 144p videos, such is the latency/lag! Perhaps, unless you upgrade your infrastructure, these TLDs would remain unpopular.

I have tested one of alt domain on different browser with additional plugin ,but still not working . Its really confusing in facts that domain registered at epik and opennic really different. I also check there is no browser that support ALT domain extension without additional complicated setting on our device.

@Rob Monster @Pat8 Few days back, I have purchased one (ALT) domain from EPIK marketplace, and asked regarding non resolving DNS. I have already support ticket regarding that. Your support team told me that they found some issue resolving ALT domains, and if we face any troubles, then we will receive refund. Now, If that domain is not syncing with OpenNIC, then i will surely request refund. How can i request refund for that?

DNS has no impact on streaming speed because it has no involvement in streaming beyond finding the correct IP address. It's possible the streaming provider was relying on ECS, which some see as a privacy issue; there's a good chance the OpenNIC resolver you were using had ECS disabled. That might result in your device using a suboptimal IP address--but big streaming providers are most likely utilizing anycast rather than relying on ECS.

You can't. Same issue with your ISP--or any other resolver. ISPs sell DNS data all the time.

Just to clarify, this thread is about Epik's .o TLD, not OpenNIC's. They're separate, which caused quite a bit of confusion. @Rob Monster stated that to avoid confusion, Epik will stop offering conflicting TLDs for now, but existing domains will continue to resolve via Epik's VPN.

Unrelated to .o/this topic, but Opera for Android supports .crypto (Unstoppable Domains) without any config needed. Also Brave has/is adding support for .eth (ENS). I haven't seen any other cases yet
