45 days after expiry it goes into Registry ? Status when it cannot be purchased anymore by anyone using an auction house, like SnapNames/NameJet/GoDaddy. After another 30 days after expiry it goes into Pending Delete Status, when it can no longer be renewed by the current owner, and will drop on start of the 6th day after entering Pending Delete. When it actually drops, there will be a hoard of people, including the people named above, and maybe another 50-100 people attempting to be the first to register the domain after it drops (if it's a good domain, although most good domains are bought before the 45th day after expiry).

If you are talking about a pre-release domain at snap or NJ, then after they go through the pre-release stage and no one bids on the domain, then it generally goes to the redemption phase. 30 days of redemption phase followed by 6 days of pending delete phase, then available to public.

Hope that answers your question.
