I am doing some research right now for a project. I would like to know what type of information Newbies look for when they start in the domain industry. Anything from how to sell a name to how to push a name. I would like info on this from veteran domainers to the true newbie that just wants answers. So, what are newbies looking for?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

How to find people that buy domains... and how to figure out if a domain is good or not before I purchase it.

LOL Johname, i guess that is what everyone wants to know not just newbs haha. Anyways i am looking for things that a newbie should essential know. i.e. how to sell a domain, push a domain. Pretty much anything that will help them through their career as a domain investor.

I went to look back at my first posts
but they only go back to Dec /08

So I went through my early PM's 2006
and the biggest thing I seemed to be struggling
with, other than thinking I couldn't 'push' it for 60 days
was changing the nameservers when I sold my
first domain - (which I was walked through very patiently
by -db- :xf.love: )

I thought if I changed the nameservers from Sedo back
to the registrar, it would set the 60 day hold again!

But I also thought if I sold it without changing the
nameservers, I would get in trouble - don't ask :p

Real noob questions I have like: What do you mean I shouldn't register them all?
What is parked?
What happens when your name expires?
What does age have to do with the price if you are selling?
How do I know if I'm good at inventing names that sell?

No really, "what do you mean I shouldn't register them all"?

One of the things I found puzzling at first was acronyms. PR1, PR2 etc. When I worked it out the obvious was staring me in the face, but till then I stayed away from posts that mentioned them!

Backlinks can also be a puzzle, also traffic and revenue terms can be a bit of a head scratcher. A glossary of commonly used phrases and terms would be handy - even to the extent of what really is "generic" or "premium" etc.

I was also scared stiff of my first transfer both as a buyer and a seller. I know now it's easy but at first I was concerned that I would not understand the process.

Its this post that made me register here.

A good noobie is looking for : quests/tests of our knowledge (repetition & strengthening of concepts in our brain) && plain fair treatment by elder members i.e. just reading how they talk amongst their own.

but the latter must come before the former! good Luck and may your observations of this forum be of great example

As a forever-newbie I will "chime" in (what is chime bytheway?) :)

When I started I didn't know anything about TM / domain. To save some money for future newbies it would be nice for them to know about TM.

This would also benefit for the domaining community, so we don't read about stupid domainers regging TM domains and asking billions for them, eehhhrm who said Thiele :)

Plus I think newbies would also be interested in backordering (what it is, how its done and so on).

Domains are a hobby for me so all and all i have about 3 months experience.

I would say i agree with dong and i feel it is important: Backlinks are quite hard to understand and how they actually help a site/domian or how they can hinder it.

Also any info provided about type in traffic vs. search engine traffic.

Thanks,
Aaron

No problem:) and I will chime in a bit more if that's OK:)

I think many newbies, myself included, think that all there is to domaining is to come up with a name, list it with the brokers and lay back to dream of driving a Ferrari down Route 66 with a dazzling partner sitting alongside you. It doesn't happen that way.

What I learned is that what may make a good business name, advertising slogan or catch phrase, doesn't always mean it will make a good or valuable domain name - there are other factors to consider beside the actual name.

However, you don't think of that at first and you sit and wonder why nobody wants a name you think is money in the bank. I didn't appreciate the significance of letters, singular versions and plural versions or many other factors.

I may be wrong, but to me domaining is the same as any other "profession" if you want to go into it, first you have to learn about it. I wouldn't change my career and go into marketing without going on some sort of course, attend workshops and network. But I think many newbies think it is easier than it looks. In any case, at least where I live - there are no courses or workshops!

When the penny drops they may do what I did, subscribe to newsletters, read domainers blogs, join forums. Great - but then you are faced with terms that look like a foreign language. There are few people "off-line" you can ask so you try to figure it for yourself. When I first came across forums I thought CVCV.com was a domain name! I finally worked it out, but then it took me a while to work out the significance. Some, again including myself, would be confronted by "TLD" "CC" "IDN" "PPC / CPC / CPM Programs" affiliates, turnkey and wonder what they mean - or perhaps think that's only for advanced domainers and not worry about it all that much. Then there is forwarding, masking of domains and the benefits or drawbacks.

Another thing I think newbies may need to know is the choice of registrar. I have hundreds of names registered with a registrar nobody seems to use, so to an extent I am stuck with them unless I transfer them all to a user-friendly registrar.

The thing I like about this forum is that you can ask. No one is going to make fun of you or pour scorn on your naivety - and your idea to have such issues addressed in one place would also be a great bonus.

Sorry for the long post - and good luck with the project.
