I was wondering, what do people look for? I see that Blue.com sold for $500K and some other sold for a high price. What is with the names, blue? Fish.com? I dont get it.

Is there anyone who could help me in terms of trying to find what people are looking for. I have some concepts in mind that I want to register, but would like to know before I start buying them.

Thoughts please.

Some sales are unpredictable. Sometimes crap names will sell for ridiculous amounts of money. But as a rule, strong generic .com keywords are sought after and sell for big bucks. Most of the best names have been taken for a long time and scarcity is driving prices up.

You should also stay tuned to the new trends. New keywords are emerging all the time.
For instance a name like blog.com or wifi.com would be worth little a few years ago, because it meant nothing. Now these are premium keywords because they are in fashion, sometimes they even become household terms.
15 years back everybody would laugh at words like 'yahoo' or 'google'. That's the power of marketing and branding.

If you are new to domaining I would suggest that you invest in exts like .com or your own country TLD, I would also suggest to focus in the industry or market niche that you know best. So you know the needs of that particular industry and you can also find potential buyers for your names. Best of luck :)

sdsinc is right on the money! The chance of registering a million dollar name was over about 7 years ago.

The game now is to develop novel content (or a novel way to display it) or register a hot topic domain name.

One of the trends in recent years is to buy names because they are short. Try visiting http://www.avuw.com to get an idea of what short names are available to register. The idea is that because of the limit supply of specific types of short names and the fact that they are short is a characteristic that all cultures and people types like, the shorter names are attractive to have.

Evidence of the high demand for short names is the fact that over 350 thousand 4 letter domain names have been registered. Realistically speaking, if you want good prices for short unregistered domains be willing to wait around 3 years but there is money in selling large volumes of short names.
