I just recently started investing in domain names. It's VERY addictive! I can't stop registering domains now... >:( Haha. I bet most of these are not worth much more than reg fee, though I have good hopes for a few of them :gl:

I've read through as much material as I could find so far (NP has been an invaluable source). I know when registering a domain, it's best to stay away from hyphens in a name, look for actual words, and also avoid numbers. I also know that .com is very valuable, followed by .net. The other TLDs are not worth as much unless you have a very, very good domain name, and also certain words go better with certain TLDs rather than others.

Any additional things I should be watching for?

Here's most of my portfolio so far. What are your thoughts? Yay or nay?
Note: The KAC and KAEC ones were registered in hopes that king abdullah (economic) city might want to have these, but either way KAC is a pretty workable pair of letters.

And one of my most important questions... how can I pick up on the art of appraising a domain? Surely this is critical (albeit complicated) in deciding how much a domain is worth paying for.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

Well, I'm sorry but I don't really see any of value here.

These caught my eye but I think you would be better off finding names in auctions here or in other aftermarket auctions, sales. Three word .coms are not of much value IMO and neither are acronyms combined with words unless you find a super one. Keep reading! Keep an eye on the sales around here as well, there are some good ones to be had. I would stay away from fresh registrations unless you are absolutely sure they are worth 3X the original investment. Good luck!

Thanks, nicedomains :) Will definitely keep an eye out here.

One of the domains I have good hopes for though is buy3dtvs. It'll be a hot domain within a year, with 3dtvs coming out. They're fairly big in Japan already, and I heard samsung is making some in the US. Might take slightly longer to catch on though.

Great tip on 3 word domains :) I'll make it a point to stay away from them unless it's a red-hot domain.

Appreciate the help!

eyeonrates.com could be set up as an fx site i guess, or interest rate monitor

Thanks for the reply, digglenamer :) That's what I'm going for. CSS is a pain :P Haha. But yeah it will be an interest rate monitor in a few weeks.

I agree with a previous post about buying from an aftermarket/auctions/sedo. Instead of spending say $8/name times 40 names you could take that $320 and buy a decent domain. the other plus to buying fewer better names is the fact you are paying for less reneawl fees. for example if you bought the 40 names you would have to pay $320 every year you owned them.... with the one you buy for $320 upfront you only have to pay $8 the next year.

SMBgeek, very good point. I hadn't thought about that (the renewal fee savings) :) Will definitely keep that in mind. Thing is, with more domains, I can experiment a little more. Would suck if I ended up paying a huge amount for one of the domains I already have, and from how much I know right now, that's very possible.. LOL. I thought some of the names I have are pretty good. First step is educating myself further before I can confidently bid 320 on a domain. This place is definitely helping with that :)

try to concentrate on short domains, 2 words max ( must be make sense together).

Thanks Raja :) Will do. I've been looking around for that. I'll try to offload the domains I currently have and then start being much more picky about which domains I get.

l2ride, that's awesome stuff! I hadn't even heard about telepresence. Did you hand-reg those?

ah man, sweet! Thanks for sharing that :) That's an awesome video. Haha and conventions sound great. Sounds like you do good first-hand research before investing, which is the smart way of going about it. Learning a lot from you already :)

Thanks alibaba :) I did try to learn a little before I got those domains.

Haha yeah I heard about domain tasting a little, but wasn't 100% sure what it is. I heard something about it in the logs for the ICANN meeting that was held in France. Apparently they're going to do all they can to discourage that, so not sure how long that'll last.

On that topic though, what is domain tasting / how is it done? And how do you search on Overture for a keyword? :( I'm lost there, haha.

Stay away from trademarks (ebay) And dont get carried away, I think one thing that almost every domainer did when he/she was starting out, is buy everything. Do research, only buy what you truly feel has a value.

Thaks domainer50 :) The ebay site was meant to be a guide to ebay. Hopefully that won't cause any TM issues. Learning more to research the names before I buy :) I usually hit up google now to see how many results I get, and do the same on yahoo. That's about as far as my research skills go for now. Any additional ways of researching domain names?

I would say, check some of the PPC payouts. You might find a name that sounds or looks awful, but is paying on average $1 a click with programs like adsense.

Also check registration history to see how many times its dropped, and the best thing to do is explore all of the possible development possibilities.

That's awesome advice :) Now here comes a follow-up newbie question :P How do I check the PPC payout and registration history?

Googlest.com has a large list for $5 of high paying keywords, you can use different bid tools that you can find on the internet.

Use things like whois to find out registration history.

And use the way back machine to find out what the site used to look like.

I think you have registered some domain names with development potential. I have quite a few domains that are two words which in my mind have good development potential.

Go to this thread and take a look, it has a lot of tools for you to investigate the potential of domains.

Some of the domains you have that I would have probably regged if I would have thought of them before you:

bakershell.com
bedroomtech.com
eyeonrates.com
luminescentdreams.com
facialoil.com

I am not a particular fan of .net and .org, although I've bought some ccTLDs like .ws, .us and .cc; although I would recommend just buying .com.

Find parking companies (many threads about that here), park your domains, and (over time, with patience) try to understand if and why people log into your domains/parked-sites.
