What’s your name?
A: Steve

Where do you live?
A: West Coast of Florida

What’s your level of expertise?
novice, intermediate, expert, etc.
A: Novice

How much experience do you have in the domain industry?
years, experience, etc.
A: I have had domains for more than a decade. But I never thought about Domain Investing until I stumbled on GODADDY Auctions, and have watched with intrigue and even bid on a few of them in fact a won my first one today... Then I thought maybe I should research what I am doing before I get to involved and that is how I ended up on this site.

What would you like to specifically learn first?
how to buy a domain, domain history, best selling strategies, government policies, etc.
A: I would like to learn several things: (1) Best places to register domains. I currently have Godaddy Domain Club membership... But having to pay for whois privacy, email etc seems a bit pricey compared to some other registers that offer all of this for the registration / renewal fee. (2) How do you search a domains history. (3) Risks to parking domains. (4) Where are the best places to sell domains... Not so much worried about commission as much as getting the best price. I would rather pay 5-10% more commission if I can get 2X the price. (5) When do you know to hold a domain for a long haul and wait for that special buyer? (6) is there a comprehensive lists of things to avoid? I know trademarked items but what else? (7) From and investment standpoint, is it better to register new domains or pick up auctioned or expired auctioned domains. More domains means higher carrying costs. So say you're willing to commit say a couple thousand to start are you better buying a few top level domains and holding or trying to register new stuff (8)Is backordering domains worth the expense... and what does it save me... does it prevent them from going to domain auctions? and if multiple entities have it backordered are they only bid between those entities if it opens up?

Are you currently working on any projects or ideas?
A: Yes I have a few domains I plan on building sites for over the rest of the year.

What are your short-term goals in the next year?
A: I would like to learn as much as I can with out losing a bunch of money to start by jumping in hap hazardly buying or registering junk domains.

What are your long-term goals in the next 5 years?
A: Build a portfolio of say 50 - 100 hi level domains I can build sites around while I market the names.

I am also interested in the conference that will be held in January in Austin.. Is this worth it to a newbie or would it be ill advised?

Hello!

Your background should prove valuable as you read across the NamePros Forum for the topics and aspects of domain names that interest you!

And your goal of such a quality portfolio is a smart goal.

For the past few years we have transferred some names to NameSilo and registered others through NameSilo in large part due to their free domain name privacy - which suits our purposes fine,

Welcome to NamePros!

Well hello Mister Andersen (said in Agent Smith voice .. lol) .. welcome to NamePros!

You list of questions is a little too long to reply to here .. but rest assured they are all answered in the various corners of NamePros .. I also recommend you check out the various blogs and podcasts!

As for privacy ... if you're selling domains, the goal is to be as reachable as possible .. so unless it's for a domain you don't want to sell, I wouldn't bother with privacy.

I personally don't advise newcomers hand register domains because there's just too much room for error .. but given you already have a bit of experience, it might not be so bad. That being said, I personally buy most of my inventory via GoDaddy expired domain auctions (also the focus of my blog and daily lists).

Best of luck to you going forward! :)

I like your advice because I'm a novice too. In particular: "as reachable as possible" and "Godaddy Expireds". Thank you.
