Neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer to lose domain name
GoDaddy told the white supremacist site it has 24 hours to find a new domain provider.

The Daily Stormer has been called the "top hate site in America." Soon it's going to be without domain.

The site, which was involved in organising the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, has been told by GoDaddy to move its domain or have it cancelled.

GoDaddy is the website's domain provider, directing internet users and search engines to its URL. GoDaddy doesn't, however, host The Daily Stormer's content.

"We informed The Daily Stormer that they have 24 hours to move the domain to another provider, as they have violated our terms of service," the company said in a tweet, adding in an emailed statement, "If no action is taken after 24 hours, we will cancel the service."

The tweet followed a hate-filled post on The Daily Stormer, which focused on the woman killed during anti-fascist protests over the weekend. The victim, Heather Heyer, was killed when a car drove at speed into a crowd of people protesting the alt-right demonstrations.

Talk about quick response time by Godaddy. Wonder who will be the lucky new provider.. The Daily Stupids will have to find a fast transfer.

You can get a domain out of Godaddy in 15 minutes if you approve the transfer at GD - and since the receiving registrar is probably using an automated process they'll just accept it and discover the problem later.

Oops maybe I shouldn't have said that, they may not know and so just leave the domain there - for Godaddy to auction it I guess, so someone can buy it and redirect it to a worthy cause.

I dislike that disgusting website (and many others that are never shut down), but also don't like registrars to have this kind of authority over domains/websites, it can be biased and misused ! what do you think?

i'm not trying to side with the alt right or Nazis. I mean, i'm like Japanese (as u can see from my avi), but at the same time -- this is kinda not fair.

you can't just be your own domain registrar, can you? GD wants the domain transferred, not the web hosting. Like, what options do these people have?

it kind of violates freedom of press/speech when registrars can dictate what kind of content is allowed on the domains they're uh holding. I mean, in school we learn that acts of racism are illegal, but you're free to be a racist. writing your personal opinions about racism and being all crazy like that isn't illegal.

but if registrars start prohibiting things, then yeah -- kinda furthers the internet censorship problem.

i mean u know. bleh.

Where did PirateBay have their domain name all those heated years?

Customer violated the contract.

I wonder what VeriSign's stance is on registering one of their extensions for racism and hate? Maybe they violated a contract on the entire extension..

GoDaddy did the right thing here, and they did react quickly. We can all follow the domain to its new registrar and then contact them so they're aware of what they are holding for a customer..

I read what they posted yesterday, some vile stuff. Today the site is up and there is a post:

END OF HATE: ANONYMOUS NOW IN CONTROL OF DAILY STORMER

.......
WE WILL ALLOW THE SITE TO REMAIN ONLINE FOR 24 HOURS SO THE WORLD CAN WITNESS THE HATE

THEN WE WILL SHUT IT DOWN

PERMANENTLY..........

Lots more in the post, won't link to it but you can do a simple Google search.

Then I read some twitter account that's it's not them but the owner wanting people to believe it's them. So who knows.

"DAILY STORMER HACK IS A FALSE FLAG OP BY OWNER ANDREW ANGLIN TO IMPLICATE ANONYMOUS IN HIS WEBSITE'S SHUTDOWN"
https://twitter.com/TheAnonJournal

http://www.newsweek.com/did-anonymo...kTwitter&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social

Makes sense, since the rest of the articles are still up.

I posted Godaddy ToS in another thread: https://www.namepros.com/threads/do...sion-to-cancel-a-domain.1035593/#post-6305611
GoDaddy may also cancel the registration of a domain name, after thirty (30) days, if that name is being used, as determined by GoDaddy in its sole discretion, in association with spam or morally objectionable activities. Morally objectionable activities will include, but not be limited to:
  • Activities prohibited by the laws of the United States and/or foreign territories in which you conduct business;
  • Activities designed to encourage unlawful behavior by others, such as hate crimes, terrorism and child pornography; and
  • Activities designed to harm or use unethically minors in any way.

Again, the title is misleading

They are not LOSING domain, they are told to move to another provider.

Becareful what you wish for

I didn't wish for anything. I just simply stated VeriSign (who owns the .COM extension) likely has their own set of rules and guidelines as well.

You know how things are these days. People are going to be watching that name closely to see where it goes. If @JB Lions is correct in the latest update about it moving to Google, then he is also correct that they will be the new ones getting backlash.

It's already happening -
"Google needs to take a swift course against The Daily Stormer especially after its scandal with sexist bigotry."

"BREAKING NEWS: 'Neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer moves registration to Google after GoDaddy severs ties' It's Google's turn."

https://twitter.com/TheAnonJournal

Then the person who first tweeted about them and GoDaddy that kicked all this off, just tweeted again towards Google:

@google The Daily Stormer, the neo-Nazi website, is now registered w you after being kicked off @GoDaddy for their hate. Please remove!

https://twitter.com/Amy_Siskind/status/897153273379139584

I imagine if Google does something, next stop will be some low end registrar.

You don't need a domain name to host a website. If they push it underground, then it will just be harder to control. Just as an experiment, I might try hosting a website on a notebook over public WiFi.

Wrong. Best way to deal with this sort of thing is to have it out in the open where everyone can see. Shut it down and you isolate people who are full of hatred and will then find other more extreme ways to draw attention.

Google says no: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40922029
"The domain is no longer at GoDaddy and we don't host the site," the Arizona-based company tweeted at 17:51 BST.

Just over an hour later Google issued its own statement: "We are cancelling Daily Stormer's registration with Google Domains for violating our terms of service."
