Need cost effective domain name registrar

Hi,

I am creating a new website, can anyone tell me some good and cost effective websites to get a domain name.

Go daddy I've had a few domains with them and I like their service.
Dynadot Ive heard is also good.
Name.com another good site.
Moniker people have recomended it for it's security.

I use Moniker and really like them

I'd personally recommend against GoDaddy - they are really slow (and in the past few days/weeks they have been slower than usual), their prices are high unless you go hunting for coupon codes all the time, and their security/some of the scare stories about them don't sound good.

But yeah; Moniker, Name.com, NameCheap, etc all have pretty good reputations.

i liked moniker until recently. now purchasing url forwarding seems to be no guarantee that you'll actually get it.

if you're building a site, url forwarding is important.

they say it can take 72 hours to take effect, but i've been waiting a week or more for two names, and moniker hasn't been quick about responding to complaints. i registered nearly a thousand names there over the past year, but i've stopped. and i'm considering transferring names that i want to develop away from there.

at this point, go daddy looks more attractive to me...and i hate go daddy.

so, sorry, i can't recommend a register. can only offer a negative recommendation.

If you have registered so many names with them, ask who your account rep is and contact him/her with your queries.

I agree that Moniker customer service are useless, but Bari on here and my account rep Don are both really helpful.

Out of interest, if you are making websites, why do you need URL forwarding? Unless you are with a free host who only provides subdomains you just need to change the nameservers and then you can use the domain in itself?

good idea, tristan. i will contact my account rep. that should put an end to the frustration i've been feeling the past week while speaking to the wind.

as for why i need url forwarding, up til now i've mostly hosted my non-blog minisites on afs space i get (and pay for) from a university i attended. (tried a commercial host for a while, but using their service was so unwieldy that i let it drop).
