What's your opinion of having a number in a domain name? Will it literally kill the domain's value? And is it really true the shorter the domain name, the higher the value (if so, why are there so many 4 to 5 character names left to buy)?

Appreciate if some kind soul could educate a n00b on these matters.

Thanks!

I hate domains with numbers.
I also think that the maximum length for a domain name should only be 10.
So instead of milliondollarhomepage.com it would be mlndlrhmpg.com?

Well said Gene. ;)

ChrisKL, this is why a knowledgable human's appraisal is worth more than an automated program's. A human can recognise the link between individual words and knows the meaning and value of each. A human can appreciate phones4u.com, a computer sees a word, a number and a lone letter, and marks it down.

In short, the use of the number varies with every domain, and hence each case must be reviewed and appraised in a unique way. Just register what you think a buyer may want to use as his domain.

Gene, where is a good appraisal service? I see some, but which one has a good rep? Sedo's can be quite expensive, and I don't even see an example page of what a person can get for $19.95 to $39.95.

Am thinking about developing a few domains to upsale.

As for domain length, go ask Alex over at milliondollarhomepage.com :)

well some numbers as indicated above are OK. For adult names the numbers 69 and 18 have magic add-on connotations B-) On a slightly different tack, I have thought that something1.com will increasingly be used in the future...

IMO it really depends on the name and the extention.

I have had a bit of interest in my 16th.info and my 40th.info and I do think the extention fits well.

call4cash, phones4u catchy and easy to remember.

Its all in the marketing and the buyer :)

Just my pennies worth

yeah I agree the 4u is catchy and easy to remember.

But if its like bob438503.com then that sucks

I honestly couldn't tell you, because I've never used a paid appraisal service. I think they're a waste of time and money, unless you're just looking for bragging rights. If the domain is worth anything at all, the buyer will determine the price -- NOT an appraisal company. What good is a $12,000 appraisal if the buyer isn't willing to go above $3,000? Appraisals I've seen are way out of line with what street values actually are. Sorry!

You could try posting your domain in the appraisal section of the NamePros forum. Paying for appraisals is ridiculous, because in the end, they're just going to tell you what you want to hear for paying them.

I think it depends on the name, like 2u and 4u are very nice.

Domainprince: thinking back you're right! My sis has a domain with 4u at the end. Well the first part of the name belongs to a foreign oil company (this was no way a squatting issue, the name has been a character to one of her graphic novels for 3 decades -- plenty of evidence). Let's just say she gets emails for that oil company. :x

So who knows, tack on 2U or 4U to a DN and it can happen to you too.

Domains with numbers in them usually do not generate as much traffic as those without the numbers.

Not type in traffic Element, but maybe repeat traffic once they've found it...
