What's your opinion of having a number in a domain name? Will it literally kill the domain's value? And is it really true the shorter the domain name, the higher the value (if so, why are there so many 4 to 5 character names left to buy)?

Appreciate if some kind soul could educate a n00b on these matters.

Thanks!

what do you mean it will kill a domain's value? from the SEs point of view? otherwise of course it kill value, noone will care for a domain like FLOWERS23.COM

I can understand with that example of FLOWERS23.COM, but what about using numbers that actually needed (think the adult market)? If the numbers are a logo in itself and the domain is s-h-o-r-t, will the domain value take a hit just because it has a number in it?

What I'm doing as an investment strategy is to buy names with dual/triple/quad built in markets (including Adult), which can be typed into a browser and not even tip off the boss or IT department (if you know what I mean). Plus if ICANN requires in the future adult domains have to have the .xxx extension, well these names will blur the lines (if for anything draw traffic to the .xxx site, in a round about way).

So I found a way to exploit some numbers, and it has some, ah, deep meaning to more than a few markets, yet don't know if it's worth shelling out clams for (like the stragedy won't work because of the numbers issue).

Makes sense now?

JMHO- Most domain "investors" evaluate domains too stringently. :notme: Dealing with resellers and end users is like night and day. The funny thing is the resellers want to buy your domain dirt cheap and have all these rules: no more than 5 letter one word etc.. End users that I've dealt with don't really care because they are not savvy to the domain world nor limited to evaluating domains by collector standards. For example, an EU might favor "bestrosesshop.com" over cheaproses.com because to them it just sounds better. As far as number and hyphens go.... I am negotiating a nice sale for an A-1genericservice.com right now. GL

Though if it were www.flowers2u.com then it may not be that much of a problem IMO.

i dont think that numbers will kill it, just matters how you do with the site.

Primavera, that's helpful advice. :)

Hmmmm, have a parked domain of cg-1.com. Folks keep telling me it's value isn't much because of the hyphen and number (but that is a short and sweet combo) . Nice to know even those type of domains can be sold, too. :)

I was wondering if the "2" or "4U" would count against a domain. Have a domain called myindependence2.com (which I got to make a revolutionary site), just sitting there looking for a home too. ;)

2u or 4u don't usually kill a name's value.

I personally stay away from DNs with numbers,But have seen some rack up some traffic stats,I stay within the boundries of no more than 13 letters in a DN.

XFactor: is the traffic statics the main value of a domain? Or is a combination deal (i.e., name recognition and stats)? In my understanding, traffic isn't much if it's not unique, and direct traffic.

IMO it really depends on the name and the extention.

I have had a bit of interest in my 16th.info and my 40th.info and I do think the extention fits well.

call4cash, phones4u catchy and easy to remember.

Its all in the marketing and the buyer :)

Just my pennies worth

Yes,The DNs that i have known of with a number or numbers in included,Where parked and got typin unique visitors,Such a name as Everydaybargains4u.com = Just an example,But more noted would be a 3 char CF3,Google,Yahoo and Ovt that LLN and look at the results ;)

Mellow: do you own the .info extension? lololol Seems like you have a lot of them! ;)

Yep, those DNs look good. Short and sweet.

XFactor: I'm looking at a 4 or 5 character length name with 2 numbers in it (for the Adult market, although it can be an interesting tie in for another market). Would it matter if the number was at the beginning or the end? As this domain name I'm looking at can make it go either way.

Man, you could not have picked a worse subject to as an example :) Do you have any idea how much the name 1-800-flowers.com is worth?

Contrary to what most people seem believe the value of domain names is dictated by what someone is willing to pay for it, not by how long it is, how many letters or numbers it has, or it's astrological chart. You can have a number in a great name such as mp3.com. You can also have on in a crap name such as jo0.com. The fact that a number is or is not there means absolutely nothing in itself.

More speculator urban legends. A name such as ui.jp is a lot shorter than creditcards.com. One sold for 2.75 million. I'll give you three tries to guess which one it was :)

Because size doesn't matter :)

I truly don't believe it will make any difference,Like 7sexy.com-Sexy7.com and soforth,As long as it's memorable,I don't see that playing a factor.

As for domain length, go ask Alex over at milliondollarhomepage.com :)

Well said Gene. ;)

ChrisKL, this is why a knowledgable human's appraisal is worth more than an automated program's. A human can recognise the link between individual words and knows the meaning and value of each. A human can appreciate phones4u.com, a computer sees a word, a number and a lone letter, and marks it down.

In short, the use of the number varies with every domain, and hence each case must be reviewed and appraised in a unique way. Just register what you think a buyer may want to use as his domain.

I hate domains with numbers.
I also think that the maximum length for a domain name should only be 10.

Are you kidding?! We would have run out of sensical domains long ago if they were limited to 10.
