Not breaking news, the above headline is just in case anyone hasn’t seen mTLD’s official blog post.

Already posted the link and commentary in my other thread (the one that turned out surprisingly analytical) here:

http://www.namepros.com/dot-mobi/393711-sedo-3-100-more-mtld-premiums.html#post2354750

To keep the above thread focused on the issues being discussed, I’ll try to post here periodic updates as more and more domains exceed their reserve prices.

'Running commentary' posts are welcome here from anyone, preferably free of foul language;)

I just got 2 confirmations for my 2 domains.

Sedo now says

We are aware the there are some problems with the .MOBI Auction at this time. Due the down time we were not able to extend the auction before the set closing time. Some bidders may have received emails saying that they have won the auction, however because the system was down the highest bid at the time the system failed are not binding according to our terms and conditions. The auction will be up and running very shortly and will be extended by 20 minutes to ensure all interested parties can place their bids. While this is unfortunate, the good news is that the problems are due to the large number of last minute bidders! This is the first time an auction has brought down our servers due to such a large amount of activity.

Be assured that if there is any additional down time again, it will again be extended to ensure all bidders can place their desired bids. You may want to check your buyer control panel to see if all your bids were logged properly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

While the might have a technical out in some verbiage somewhere on their site regarding technical difficulties, I think they may have legal issues because after the fact they sent out confirmations to winning bidders. If they halted confirmation it would be another story, imo.

I think it's only fair that sedo gives ample notice on the auction extension.Pick it up same time tommorow. It would be to a dito many if they just popped it back up in short notice cause many of us can't be in front of a PC at any given moment,I hope they take this in consideration.

Regards

OK, they are going for the additional $$$$$$.
But I bet a lot of bidders are drunk by now, even if they can be located.

If they do call them on their cells, get them bidding - we could see some very ---um--- high bids.

Wow Lol!

Who'd have ever thought a bunch of crazy .mobi investors could bring down Sedo :guilty:

I wasn't bidding on any names, but was refreshing my page every couple minutes like I'm sure every interested buyer was (okay, you were probably doing it every 10 seconds ;) ). Then... Well, we all know what happened then :lala:

I guess we can call this auction a success. :imho:

you know who got really screwed by this glitch are all those resellers who timed their sales to coincide with the ending of the mobi auction. I almost put a few up this time but held back.

And it's a brand new bidder. Even bigger news is that music has jumped from $66,000 before the extension to already $103,500 after the extension. There was obviuosly going to be much last minute action without the crash.

No offense but you have to win the names fairly. This was unfortunate what happended but sedo is doing the right thing by re-starting the auction!

Sedo is most likely ok by law since this was a glitch and not a deliberate act.

i agree with keith, this is fairest alround. i think sedo are covered in terms but i'm no legal expert.

i wonder if people will learn from sedo's shortcomings and get bids in early

who's to say it wont happen again? then what?

yep I agree with keithmt. It certainly sucks if you thought you won but legally you have little to no chance. The fine print of all their agreements say the contract is between buyer and seller not sedo. Sellers who get stiffed for instance have a right to take legal action only against the buyer not sedo.

I feel the same way about this, Keith. I think Sedo would be in for far more legal trouble had they not restarted this auction and left buyers out in the cold. They have to disappoint someone... Either the person who got the email saying they won or the person who wanted to enter their bid but couldn't. I think there's alot more of the latter than the former -- hence a wise decision imho.

Auctions (especially ones that extend with last minute bids) are designed to milk as much money out of people's pockets as possible... The auction being designed to sell the names to the highest paying bidder -- only makes sense to restart the auction if Sedo feels the highest paying bidders didn't get a chance to enter their bids.

It really is unfortunate, as many have noted, however, that some people may very well think they've won a name right now or not realize that the auction is underway again... Always a good reason to place a large bid early on if you can afford it...

True that.

I'm surprised movies.mobi is lagging behind somewhat. I expected it to be ranking a little higher by now. Don't people go to the movies anymore in these days of home theaters and flat screens the size of paddocks.

It's 7.28 in the morning here in NZ. Set my alarm especially to wake myself up to watch this dramatic end of auction, and now have to hang on another 1 and half hours. Oh well... more coffee

:hehe:
