So I got an inquiry about one of my geo dot tvs. The inquiry came from someone associated with a regional newspaper company.

And I see this person already has one geo dot tv in his home market. Interesting.

That is great news. I hope to see more of that along with television stations getting into .tv like ABC did with Nebraska.tv.

Thanks, Jim

Here is what I believe is happening. As newspapers lay off, some writers and editors are banding together to form online versions. These partnerships don't have enough money to command the high premiums necessary to secure a geo dot com. Therefore, they are looking at alt extensions. Since .tv is a recognizable brand outside of the internet space, I think some are looking to .tv provided they can secure cities at reasonable prices.

Interesting ... which Geo .TV domain did you get an inquiry for, and did they state that they were from / associated with a regional publication?

Thanks for any additional insight,

They called and emailed me. I saw the name of the company on caller id and googled it. One clue lead to another and once I found the company, I looked at all the geo dot tvs in their home markets, realizing the home city is already regged - a geo never mentioned on NP but the home of a world famous sporting event.

I believe some of the folks at the paper are trying to buy the domain, not the company - but I could be wrong. I noticed the paper is having layoffs.

My interest is now further piqued ... can you state which Geo .TV of yours they have an interest in, and which Geo .TV they already have in their home market (and, thus, why they're interested in acquiring yours) - is yours a better domain name? :gl:

Do they also own .COM (or other TLD) domains ... for this potential online venture, in their home market?
Thanks for the assist.

I'm pulling Charleston.TV off the market. I've decided to renew and re-think my strategy with this domain.

Jeff - sorry I can't be more forthcoming, but that should give you some idea

The dot com in their home market is owned by a sports company

I don't really understand what's happening here (and, I admit, I am still a bit intrigued), but Good Luck with your .TV domain name. :talk: :imho:

Generally, is there really much (or more) interest in ".TV's" ... by newspaper (including former) publications?
IYHO's.

Since I posted this thread, more information has come to light.

I believe there is interest in .TVs from newspaper professionals for two primary reasons:

1) Erosion of primary business - as print revenues decrease, media companies are looking for online brands to build dominant brands. While dot com is still the preferred extension, my experience is that dot tv is an acceptable alternative especially if the new business model involves video.

2) Newspaper layoffs - many ex-writers and editors are on the street due to layoffs. With limited employment potential in their old line of business, these folks are looking to acquire great brands than can be launched as new local portals with a cadre of former reporters providing content for these new brands.

If you look at dot com, it is the newspaper companies who have acquired geo dot coms like Charlotte.com, Jacksonville.com, and Cincinnati.com.

I believe newspaper companies (who face the greatest risk) would view the convergence of video, television, and the net as the best opportunity to reinvent themselves. The newspapers don't have 50 years of brand value branding "WWBT12" (ie call signs).

Therefore, they are looking to geo domains as great "fresh" brands that can be built into new online brands for their new business model.

All good info, but I'm wondering if there is specific observation or evidence ... that these folks may be adoptive of the ".TV" in particular, for these new entities & online ventures?

In my observation, print/newspaper (current or former) folks are not overly warm or embracing of anything to do with TV or television, IMHO. :red:

^ Agreed, and hence my intrigue (and question(s) here regarding similar likelihood of ".TV")? :gl:

My evidence is a phone call, offer, and now the who is record of a geo dot tv.

All this is being done by the web directors at a handful of media companies acquiring geo dot tvs under their own name.

Where one person made a mistake was calling on their office phone.

Without that evidence, it would just be another sale to another dot tv investor.

There is already a number of newspapers & magazines who are using the .tv extension for their online brand & as part of a greater use of Video.
Though what i said above doesn't apply specifically to Geo .Tv, just .TV's in general.

In addition, lets not forget that Landmark Communication owns: Richmond.TV, Baltimore.TV, Roanoke.TV, and HamptonRoads.TV

Answer: Not my reference. I was thinking Green.

Though I haven't seen any evidence of the acquisition and/or adoption (and development) of .TV's specifically in this capacity, there is no doubt that traditional media, namely print and especially newspapers, are currently going through a rather severe period of transition ... for which domain names - of varied Geo's and extensions - may very well benefit for many of the reasons stated IMHO. :music:

Thanks for sharing (what you could), and for the discussion! :talk:

Yea, as a bundle...not as a standalone.

BTW the General Manager of Louisville.com (Dan Vonderheide) just purchased Louisville.TV. Louisville.TV will be integrated into Louisville.com. Dan is a great guy. He thinks out of the box. We have formed a nice friendship over the past six months.

See you soon.

I have chatted with many local newspaper/tv/radio reporters here in the Tampa Bay area over the past 2 year re: TampaBay.TV and TB.TV - the sale/partnership I have with a local early adopter gentleman here in Tampa Bay will build on the collaborations we will be building with these laid off/early retirement/fired individuals.
