As I recall the company that owns Moniker also owns Snapnames.

However I noticed it says if you backorder a domain via Snapnames, Snapnames 'aquires it' and auctions it off to anyone else willing to pay more. Where as Namejet would just try and grab it....

but my question is, if someone at Snapnames bids on it before the delete goes through, does that mean no other registrar (i.e. namejet) has a chance at getting it? Like GoDaddy auctions hording method?

or do they play fair and go after the deleted name like everyone else?
The current Snapname status is "Available Soon"

backorder at both, there's no cost unless you get the domain.

Read the whois carefully, in order to make sure that the domain is pending delete at the registry.
Then it may depend on the registrar and prerelease relationships with Snapnames or Namejet for example.

When a domain actually drops it's a free-for-all as to who catches the domain. No past relationship matters a whoot. As lothos says you can backorder a domain before it drops at many backorder companies.

I don't understand you comment " Like GoDaddy auctions hording method?" There are two types of backorders at the likes of NameJet/SnapNames. Pre-Release and Pending Deletions. The Pre-Release domains are the same as what I think you are referring to. These domains are about 35 days away from being dropped. When you bid on these domains (and win) the domain retains it's original registered date. There is no point in bidding on these domains in any other place than where the domain is listed. The Pending Deletions are the free-for-all I mention above. They will drop and will become newly registered. These are the domains you should order at multiple back-order companies, although SnapNames is by far the biggest and win the "lion's share".

Thank you for the replies all. That makes sense. PendingDelete is the status I'm eyeing. I didn't know if there was some form of favoritism involved between companies with Moniker.

What I meant by GoDaddy "Hording" is certain domains they are auctioning off as expired show a renewal date with +1yr added and GoDaddy redemption services as the admin contact. I wasn't sure if backorder providers played this game effectively limiting your order to one company. I guess thats in the case of Pre-release domains

Expired domains are provisionally renewed with the registry in grace period, that's why you are seeing +1 year in registry whois.

What if I found any domain in pending delete list at Namejet, can I backorder it on SnapNames? Just before being available for registration, so that I won't be competing with too many bidders?

Yes you can. But SnapNames isn't guaranteed to win it. Which is why it's best to backorder at multiple companies.
