All of you Mobi-eers check out Yahoo's new mobile site.

Hello All,

After reading all these posts here's my 2 cents:

I think we are trying to push .mobi too fast sometimes. It will be great when its time but it was only released 4 months ago, so we can't expect everyone to use it right away. The only reason we are here talking about .mobi is because we are domainers, and we are trying to get in on the ground floor. I think the hype of dot mobi was accelerated due to the high priced premium .mobi sales at TRAFFIC east.

I think .mobi is everything it's hyped to be, but with more time. The extension is here so its not going anywhere and it will be utilized because the mobile internet is just beginning to happen. Eventually the stars will align and .mobi and the mobile internet will engage one another. Like JeremyP, I believe that .mobi will be like .org in the respect that it will be a solid alternative to a mobile redirected .com.

.mobi is here, its not going anywhere so companies will use it and some (including very big companies) already are only 4 month into this thing. Imagine 4 years into this thing.

Mobile internet is moving forward and .mobi is contributing to it.

Just my thoughts. :)

Just checked out http://mobile.yahoo.com/go, looks great! Although they need to use the .mobi for this!

Yahoo! Go truly brings the Internet to you. Unlike prior applications that attempt to force-feed a PC experience to your phone, Yahoo! Go has taken the Internet services you love and optimized them for the mobile experience.

hey labrocca whatever you say you are obviously more intelligent than anybody here and anybody ant mTLD, let me ask you one question oh intelligent one.

If mobi takes off and does what we think and they claim that it can and should do, who will be the moron, me or you? If i lose $10k because I took a shot to make several hundred thousand if not more, I think it is worth it.

It doesn't take an intelligent person to take risks or to gamble. Also mTLD is already successful in the launch of .mobi. It's the average johnny come lately domainer that will inevitable loose their shirts on mobi.

I could have registered lots of mobi names...I felt I did my research and didn't want to get involved. My energy and funds are tied up elsewhere. I grabbed a few select mobi the first couple days and sat back and watched the show. I said even early on that the mobi extension imho isn't worth the hype.

I wonder if Traffic East didn't sell flowers.mobi for $200k would domainers have spent their many thousands on mobi? One only has to look at the mobi marketplace here at NP to see some of the rather terrible names people have registered. A good name is a good name but a bad name is still a bad name no matter the extension.

When I ask hard questions about the future of mobi I get responses full of speculation and what-if's. Answer the million dollar question for me.

What has the backers of .mobi promised to mTLD to become backers. When I get an answer to this question I might change my attitude. However since this is a question that even mTLD doesn't answer I can only assume the mobi backers have smoke and mirror deals.

BTW....if you really think that Microsoft doesn't attach their name and logo to just anyone...you are WRONG. What do you know about marketing? I know a heck of a lot. Enough to know that a phone call and a couple faxes and Microsoft is happy to lend their name to you. How do I know this?...because I have done it.

I don't think anyone here is a "bad guy"...I just think some here are deluded or have their own agendas to push .mobi since they have staked a lot of money into them. Some may have staked more into .mobi than the so-called backers. Ever think of that?

I feel my opinion is objective. I have very little to gain by the success or failure of .mobi. Odd people think I am the bad guy just because I asks questions and have an opinion...so answer my question then.

What has the backers of .mobi promised to mTLD to become backers.

When you can tell me exactly what nokia, samsung, ericsson, and all the other backers actually have staked into mobi then maybe I will believe the hype. These companies have been nearly silent about mobi and even mTLD doesn't give us ANY info on the relationship with the backers.

Could it be that they are simply following a classic marketing rule: don't launch the ads until the product is ready?

I note the good point made above by yoyosean about Samsung launching a phone called Mobi (about which I must admit I've heard nothing), but further west I haven't seen any phones with a .mobi button in general circulation yet. So the handset manufacturers are probably focusing on design and engineering rather than marketing at this point. But who knows, maybe they really are having second thoughts about the whole mobile internet thing.

If you despise the speculation of .mobi why do you bother to read the "speculation" and respond to the "speculation" Really why bother? Life is full of speculation. If you tell me that you are going to eat breakfast tomorrow, you can't guarantee it (what if I said, "prove it"), no one knows what tomorrow will bring in any situation. It is speculation that any of us will wake up tomorrow, we hope we will, so we plan things and ang set goals etc. but it all revolves around "if" we wake up tomorrow.

Its ok to have a different opinion about the subject, but if you don't think .mobi will be successful that is just speculation too.

That sounds like speculation to me.... Prove it!

I was going to mention this as well.
In the world of investing, both longs and shorts can be considered to be speculators.
Of course, there is nothing to short in this case but you get the point.

you ask hard questions about .mobis future and get speculation and what ifs?
Really, no kidding?

perhaps you should tell us, what does it say in your "Answer Book" teacher's edition?

Ladies and Gents.. I think we've found the domain fortune teller.

Excellent point.

I want us to examine what happens when the biggest companies "put their name on the line" in a hot product. Might this be an Illuminati like coalition that are calling one another joining forces to benefit even more from the world with their enlarged network?

Remember the most $$$ things are secrets held by the most powerful people, cross boarding companies just a phone call away.

13 weeks into dotMobi with hardly any sites out, do you think they want to explode prematurely and banner dotmobi? What would happen? When all the domainers like us would buy up all the .mobi properties instead of well funded companies and they would fear all we would do is "park" them like many .coms. That is one of the strong reasons why they reserved premiums (which after some time when released, .mobi will catch even more fire and then we should examine "where are the big boys" now). Do you think they want to come to these forums and encourage us to buy more .mobis hehe though some of us have done it naturally; do you think they read these forums but don't talk on them?

Now let's flip this. When Big Bush and Clinton joined forces in the noble effort to aid the Tsunami disaster.. that made a team among the two halves in the powerful Washington force. Seemingly opposite sides were actually joined in brotherhood for the benefit of society (with implications beyond only humanitarian by nature). So, all those big guys reading this, I give Kudos for Samsung coming out of the shell of secrecy a bit..

What would I say to them? I hope they recognize the value of internet freedom for the masses.. its our Judgement. With advocacy from the user perspective like I spoke of above.. it does not have to be a choice "make a buck" or "fight for the grassroots user".. it can be both

But I see the point, don't strike the iron until it is HOT.

I agree, despite even many corporate registrations, alot of people and companies are still ascertaining the trends unfolding to benefit from them with corresponding product line. How will .mobi vs .com etc. unfold? As a corporation how long should we sit back to read the trend or how much dare to be a first mover? What goes on in the highest level meetings and phonecalls? If a CIA agent must not reveal his identity, what do you think the highest level corporate center of the spider web would reveal to the us the public 13 weeks into .mobi? Surely they are planning, and analyzing the trends just like us. Is anyone here part of the New World Order flipped reading this that can give us some eye candy, you have the floor!

Just joking! heh

Normally when companies sign deals to promote a product press releases are issued giving some indication of their involvment. This is not the case with mTLD.

Also I don't despise the speculation...I simply don't agree with many speculators in the mobi field. On a scale of 1-10 my prospects for mobi are around 5-6...while many are 9-10...yet very few of those high-end speculators can give reasons for their energetic hope.

Hey...you guys do what you want. You want to buy 1000 mobi names...go right ahead. Everyone is free to do what they want. However this is a domainers forum and I am also entitled to participate in an open discussion of mobi.

btw...a board of directors doesn't own a company. Sometimes they aren't even paid. Often board members simply help to direct a company. Oddly that list of directors scares me more than anything...most of those companies are competitors. One has to wonder how much they will share with each other in order to improve .mobi.

Looking at the CEO...he is a damn Network Solutions ex-vice president..one of the worst companies around!

http://pc.mtld.mobi/mobilenet/about_investors.html

Also the board of directors is mostly filled with marketing gurus and vice presidents. You can read their own statements on that page about mobi and it sure sounds encouraging yet I see no real information there.

imho .mobi will ultimately be successful only after internet users adapt to it...I think the chances of that are rather slim as it would first take a lot of companies to develop and promote their mobi sites...so far...that's looking pretty bad. Most companies are just redirecting their mobile users to their .com brand.

Feel free to disagree.

it is quite simple if .mobi says that the companies are investors in .mobi than that is what they are, maybe they have invested 10 k and maybe they have invested millions, you and i will never know until they are a public co. or until they decide to publish that information.

You have not answered my question, can you not see why Samsung would want a .Mobi, can you not understand why cingular and others would want a standardized protocol that makes the user experience on the mobile web better? If not than we shouldnt even be having a discussion, the thing that .mobi has going for it that none of the other tld's do is they are not vying for the same real estate, the PC, they are vying for the mobile real estate, so if they become the .net or .org of the mobil world than they have succeeded.

True, but investors do usually.

labrocca said:

This is what I raised in my previous answers to your question. Dotmobi, legally, raises a lot of antitrust questions to me. You have some competitors agreeing on a standard. Let's suppose (just for the hypothesis, no that I expect it to be the future), that they tell clearly, we will do heavy marketing regarding .mobi extension, our phones will default to .mobi and have a .mobi button, search through with msn and google will advantage .mobi extension. They own all the best names right now. There is no scrutiny how they will be allocated. I would expect that competitors, which are not part of dotmobi, would strongly complain.

Thus, IMHO you are just asking something which is impossible. It appears to me totally normal to keep a low-profile until the names are attributed (plus of course, you would first build content and then do marketing). I don't see what else than raising speculation and problems it would give to talk about dotmobi right now...

labrocca said:

I totally agree.

It's here, that I disagree. I don't see any relevance in the price .mobi are sold between domainers regarding .mobi long term future success. But, also, I don't see why, that after only 4 months, .mobi went public, this should be negative. I don't see what advertising would add except than raising speculation and problems (plus of course I guess they want to keep the revenues of a closed portal for the longest possible time)

"Samsung, a leading provider and innovator of mobile phones, and Yahoo, have announced a strategic global partnership to distribute Yahoo's popular services on millions of new Samsung mobile phones"

http://fup.ca/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=22

.mobi needs to be developed by the small fish because it's clear the big fish are moving ahead without it at this point. They are instead using established tld's and tech to deliver mobile content.

It's time for Dot-Mobi to get off their a$$ and sell Music, Video and Travel for development.

Otherwise it will be as WhiteBark said.

That article makes NO mention of .mobi or mTLD. You will get no argument from me that mobile internet is the future...what I disagree with is a seperate internet that's mobile which is what .mobi strives for. They would like .mobi to be a .com. If they succeed ,TLD will be more powerful than ICANN and just as corrupt. Domainers seem all too willing to help since they might pocket a few bucks in-between.

The cell providers and technology makers would love to get a grip on the internet. Currently it's in the hands of everyday people.

you guys are insane, you are so skewed by your distaste for .mobi you only look at the press releases re anything but .mobi is it no big deal that samsung named a phone the mobi and they have registered 100's of mobi domains, does it mean nothing that a consortium came together to develop standards for the mobile internet?

whatever guys. dont buy .mobi and i am sure you will be fine, i will buy .mobi and if i make money you should be happy for me.
