Let's discuss this!
Hi Mejcdj, thanks for the reply. I encourage others to understand this carefully as it is very important..

If i am understanding your post, you are askling why the mobile companies don't install a detect program that will see if the site is a full version or a smaller version and adapt the page accordingly instead of moving towards a mobile standard site?
The detect and redirect and be done on the .mobi! (this keeps access to the full .com featured site on the PDA available)
As far as I know, .com can still be used on the mobile web, its the content and the images on some sites that make it impossible for the mobile devices, its not the phones. The idea is to make it usable for the visitors.
I think, what they are trying to do, is instead of making the 55 million or so sites to change their content and adapt to a smaller screen, they are simply making a new standard tld (mobi) so that if the user wants to visit the web on the phone, they are garanteed a good experience. .com or .mobi. That is the 'power' you are advocating. .mobi is giving them that choice.
Yes, .mobi may give mobile device users a choice if the .com DOES NOT do a forced redirect to a mobile version as emerging standard.
People on their PDA/mobile device can choose:
1.) .mobi - shortened content with device detect redirect to mobile version
2.) .com - access to the original full blown and
full features site that the desktop computer sees (NOT a forced .com mobile redirect)
Anyone with a .com can follow the same standards. They are not exclusive to the .mobi ext. But, will they? That is why we have .mobi.
I am trying to see the coming trend, I agree I don't think we can expect all .com sites to do redirects, rather that is what .mobi is for. The macro point is we need .com to display the original desktop version (with pictures and everything, just having scrollbars ) on the PDA/mobile device as well, not a forced mobile redirect on the .com..
For example, (use your PDA if you can to see):
Currently on google.com by desktop you can access a link to Adwords with a 2 click - click on "advertising programs" then click on "adwords".
But if you use your PDA/mobile device, when I type in Google.com I get a forced redirect to a mobile version that CANNOT do the above access 2click to adwords.
Now imagine if all sites did this forced redirect., If I was in some resort on some beach somewhere I WOULD NOT have access to the 2click adwords or
any site's full features .com if there was a forced mobile redirect on the .com. We should be able to see the full original .com featured site as well! The .com on a PDA should be consistent to what we are seeing on the .com desktop computer.
It's not utilized right not because dotMobi is 13 weeks old, but doesn't this make sense as the future global way emerging standard?
.COM = COMputer version full featured site
.MOBI = any mobile device detect redirect shortened content version
Just as .mobi can be accessed by desktop computer,
.com also needs to be accessible in full version by mobile device
This is power to the user's experience perspective and advocacy..
Important to bring this up with people!
Regards, =)
