At this pace of growth we would see a huge number of sites online by the summer...

BUT the growth won't follow the same curve..... it'll follow an even steeper curve as growth is exponential... if you start with 100 a month which doubles every month you get to the stage where we are now.... 150,000 will become 300,000 will become 600,000 will become 1,200,000 & only when it hits nearer 4,800,000 or so will the curve start to slow down (marginally) to maybe double every 3 months then every 6 months then a year & so on until it starts to look like the .com site growth curve in 12 years time...

Looking at the medium term I would suggest that there is potential for 1 in every 100 people on the planet to have a .mobi domain for one reason or another; either for their own email (direct) or blogs or messaging or commerce or marketing or promotions or sports or video or webcams or adult or business or a, or b , or c, x,y,z the list goes on...

That's circa 6 Billion people divided by 100 = 60 million potential sites & thats not taking into account development of the 3rd world, the huge take-up of mobile technologies in the 3rd world, the globalisation of business, the growth in literacy rates etc.. give it 20 years & I think we will all be amazed at the difference in communications even from the levels we currently feel are impressive..

Jeff, you can always PM me if you like what you see ;)

Onwards & upwards; loving that curve!! :)

I haven't really used my old cell phone for surfing the internet, but with the recent purchase of HTC Touch, I surf very often with it (using free wifi). One of the wireless providers in my area now provides unlimited data plan for a very cheap monthly price. I think many will follow and lower the cost of the data plan. We will definitely continue see an increase in users who surf the internet using their phone.

I've noticed an increase in traffic. Mobile, and .mobi, are beginning to get noticed and they are being picked up + advertised by established companies.

Just out of interest and in reference to the last thread I posted in. What kind of sites are you visiting on it ? Normal web or primarily .mobi's for ease of use ? Datacharges obviously not an issue via wifi, so am curious if you confine yourself to .mobi's or just in general visit sites that you normally would do on your pc/laptop ?

I don't really like to put a restriction on which site I can visit just because I'm browsing through the phone. I bought HTC Touch specifically so that I can browse the internet whenever I want (mostly wifi at the moment, but there are a lot of wifi hot spots in which I can use it in)
I visit the sites I normally do using my laptop.

I'm thinking about switching to unlimited data plan with my next phone HTC Touch Cruise.
It'll go nicely with the GPS program included in the phone. (not sure if data plan applies in this case... haven't really looked into it, but GSP feature and a few other features of HTC Touch Cruise are looking attractive.)

If I was on my old sony ericsson phone, I would prefer mobified sites (although opera mini does enhance the web browsing experience even with older phones).

It's interesting to see how the 'playing field' is measured by whether or not people browse the web on an iphone (etc) to visit small screen sites or 'full sites'... the truth is that the point is missed before the questions are being asked...

if you use a site on your desk-top you are likely to desire access to that site from your iphone... at present many sites are just desk-tops so Opera etc will do the job & allow the sites to be visited..

The point that is being missed is that dotmobi is not about the existing web content so much as it is about future web content that is being (& will be) developed for small screen devices (as well as a desk-top)
There is going to be a huge rise in the number of sites that are compliant with dotmobi - if you are part of the future 'mobile' web & you want a good domain name you are going to find more choice with dotmobi than you are dotcom... in fact much of the time dotcom won't even be an option because of the lack of available names... so would you choose a decent .net for your small screen site? You could but you probably wouldn't...
At the end of the day, domains are being used & developed & traded in larger numbers every day; this is an expanding market & hence there will be a need for more & more domain names... many decent dotcoms are parked awaiting sales at extortionate prices... a dotmobi will be acquired for much less until one of two things happens; dotmobi prices rise closer to dotcom or dotcom prices start to drift down towards dotmobi.... I'm not talking 2008 / 2009 or maybe even 2010 but beyond that I would challenge anyone to come back to me then & compare notes.. ;)

Just my 2 cents as always but it is the way I see it..

Gary

I think I must be missing the point completely then. If you are able to browse unrestricted using a phone ( note, A phone not just the iPhone why are folks so hung up on the iPhone here ? there are loads that do more).. then the 'future' of mobile centric browsing is.... ?

If people are now, today, as per the poster above, using their phones for unrestricted viewing of the normal web as they don't like to restrict their options. Then what is the future for mobile web browsing then ?

Future 'web content' is just a vague throwaway comment that sounds good but doesn't mean much.

In all probability future web content is what the full web/internet/sites we visit everyday do. If people are not restricting themselves in any way, and buying phones that allow specifically (per above poster ) unrestricted access to it. Then it leaves very little 'future mobile content' that covers what the full web doesn't IMHO.

Ahhh the magic of the unknown!

Think of it this way. Would a student want to research and write a term paper on their mobile or on a PC?

Would someone prefer to view a website of landscape photos (or p0rn for that matter) on a mobile or on a PC?

Would someone prefer to compare the qualities of sports cars in preparation for a purchase on a mobile or on a PC?

~~~~~ on the otherhand ~~~~
Would you like to find which restrauant within walking distance has hot tomato soup ready?
Would you enjoy a walking tour of New York, featuring GPS so you don't get lost?
Would you like to see and download the coupons a store has available just before you walk inside?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mobile has significant advantages - it is best for short bits of information right at the moment of need. PCs can give more information and hold it in a more workable form. Sure, there will be lots of crossover and nobody is saying that .coms will not get lots of mobile traffic, but there are uses that mobile does much better, and for those a .mobi extension tells the user immediately what they are getting.

There is a famous quote of the IBM chairman saying the world only needed five computers. When the PC was first developed nobody could predict many of the ways it is now being used. Mobile is a new tool and many of its' uses also cannot be predicted yet. That is the fun part.

Couldn't put it better myself... that is where I see dotmobi ruling the (mobile) web ;)
