I purchased an NHL player's name domain thinking I could flip it and earn a quick dollar but then did some chatgpt research and found out this is not legal and called cybersquatting, is the only thing I need to do now let it expire? or is there any other way to do something? i asked atom.com and they don't seem to care about the laws and they said as long as I own it i can legally sell it on their platform (I have this chat conversation copied on my computer from their agents, several).

any thoughts?

If you want to get the registration out of your name, you don't have to wait for expiration. Registrars usually have an option to cancel a registration that can be done at any time.

The agents are incorrect.

According to their terms (https://helpdesk.atom.com/en/articles/997701-domain-marketplace-terms-conditions-sellers):

These Terms and Conditions apply to You (the seller) and Atom.
  1. General Terms & Conditions

  • Domains infringing on trademarks or impersonating known entities (cybersquatting) are not allowed.

List it cheaper than it cost to UDRP you, eg from 1000$ to 3899$ and you may sell it, see if there are other people named that way, if yes then don't worry. :glasses:
P.s. this is not a legal advice, consult with real human lawyers!

So selling it for 500$ should be fine? I don't want to be greedy.

In my experience it's hard to give away names to their namesakes. Most people just aren't interested.
