.mobi premium auctions to be awarded in January 07.

DUBLIN, Ireland and WASHINGTON, DC – November 8, 2006 – dotMobi, the official worldwide registry for the .mobi domain, this week launched the first round of its Request for Proposals (RFP) process for four highly anticipated premium .mobi domain names: "news.mobi," "ringtones.mobi," "sports.mobi" and "weather.mobi."

dotMobi will review all submitted proposals in accordance with the evaluation criteria in the dotMobi RFP application form and expects to announce winning proposals in January 2007. Each RFP submission will be evaluated on the applicant’s business and technical capability, with an emphasis on the proposed content for the Web site relating to the domain name. Sites are expected to go live by February 2007.

But news nonetheless.

I am not after those three but I have submitted an application for another one.

you know what i'm curious about...

Besides the application fee...how much will it actually cost to get one of these names??

It really depends. If for some odd reason there aren't too many people interested in a name it could sell for just the registration fee.

Could you imagine getting news.mobi for regfee? How sweet would that be??

iNod, good luck with your application :)

That would be incredible.

But, I highly doubt there is only one person interested in that name.

lol. So do I, the application cost is outrageous, but if I get this I will be rolling in the money later, so it is worth it.

how much is app fee?

For those 4 names above there is probably a good 100 for each. Since the application fee is free for those.

The other premium names you need to have a trademark or show you will develop it and advertise it,etc. Not just buy it and park it.

Application fee was $1K CAD for me, but they said it depends on the name.

For the 4000 or 5000 premium they want a TM ?
Show we'll develop domain, ok but how ? a business plan, preview of site ...?
they said domains will be sell on auction ?

Before the domains go for auction they will try and award them to the respective trademark holders if they want them.

You can apply if you hold a trademark or if you have ALOT of plans for it. I really don't know that part of it, but I submit a application for a trademark I have on a name.

My gosh €500 per domain application. mTLD almost have been given the right to print money!

It is subtly making money like a second Sunrise Period.

I was going to apply for one, but I saw the price tag and it's not worth it for a domain extension which is potentially in it's "5 minutes of fame" until people get bored.

Mobile.Domain.com it seems is the most cost effective way.

non-refundable direct quote from their site, "Each Proposal must be accompanied by a cheque for €500 (processing fee) made payable to mTLD Ltd. This fee is non-refundable.."

Aren't you the one constantly bashing .mobi, or am I mistaken?

so you truly were going to apply for one? which one? do you really have the resources to develop one of the premiums listed above? I hope names like those fall into the hands of those with deep pockets enough to meet the development timeline and get the sites in front of as many consumers as possible. I don't want premiums ending up in the hands of domainers who are just going to park it or build lackluster/useless sites that don't help to drive consumer awareness & adoption.

if CNN was granted news.mobi and was forced/encouraged to plaster their cable network with NEWS.MOBI, that's a win/win/win in my playbook. I'm 110% behind a deal like that.

I'm glad the fee is non-refundable, it helps to keep out those who aren't serious about .mobi's development & longevity. Here's what I posted in another thread:

hmmm... do you some of you really think the rfp process should be free? or refundable?

seriously?

you've got to be kidding.

think about it... the cost is a qualifier to make sure you don't waste their time or yours. if someone is paying the fee, there's a good chance that applicant has done enough R&D to justify to themselves and to MTLD that they deserve the domain name.

if it was free or refundable, it would take .mobi way too long to approve & grant just 1 domain. I want them to focus on other things... like wooing more partners, corp clients etc...

the fee is important, necessary, etc to only draw in serious developers... keep in mind, if you win/granted, I believe you only have a short time span to implement what you've promised (30-60 days?).

one more time, if the fee was refundable... nearly all .mobi domainers would send in RFPs for news.com, ringtones.com, etc... what a waste of time for MTLD to go over 1000's of RFPs per domain name (and that's a conservative guess).

just for a second, only a second, stop worrying about whether or not .mobi is milking us or conning us...

if you don't want to register more .mobis then stop.

if you don't like your current .mobis, then dump them... plenty of buyers.

but take the time to do your own due diligence and perhaps you'll see what I see... they are working hard to make .mobi relevant for consumer use... they are working hard on adoption, etc... major corps are registering .mobi domains (not only for ip protection, but speculation & development). call other .mobi owners, talk to other developers, do some whois research to see who is actually buying up .mobi domains.

re: Premium domain RFPs

IMHO, there are only a handful of people/entities that have the resources to build (i.e.) NEWS.mobi into the site it deserves to be. I would not even want to insult MTLD or even the future .mobi userbase by trying to apply for NEWS.mobi... I don't have the manpower, funding, content-power that a site like that needs to have behind it. We all want domains like those to go to the powerhouses that will develop them, and work hard to promote them and get the ".mobi" concept in front of consumers. in a situation like that, we all win. if I know I don't have the capacity to build a site like that, then I should not bitch about it. But if some of you truly believe you can build a solid site on one of the premium domains, then start saving your money for the app fee, and start doing some research, begin development on your concept but use a temporary/placeholder domain and when your target Premium becomes available for RFP, then you can show MTLD what you've already developed and why you should be granted that premium domain.

but I'm sure some of you will continue to complain about the 5000+ premiums and the RFP process... so I'll get out of your way... probably falling on deaf ears / blind eyes anyway.

'nuff said.

.

I know I'm applying for a few down the road, but only if I've been able to build a site that deserves the name. I plan to have sites built that are beyond proof-of-concept, using my own non-premium domains until the target premiums are available.

good luck to everyone.
