I thought it would be a good idea to have a "lessons learned" thread so we don't make the same mistakes with the mobile one. Some lessons won't apply here, but the bulk of them will. Hopefully this will turn out to be a worthwhile thread.
I'll put a few down
1. Simpler is better. Design and offerings
2. Search is king.
3. Just do it. If you have an idea, don't wait for someone else to come along to implement your ideas. Don't wait for the "perfect" site to be built
4. People like usefulness. This is probably more key with a battery challenged device. I would have SE boxes or log in boxes at the top of the screen. Have it doing something right away.
5. Niches work when you're not the big guy. I was thinking about this over the weekend. My guess is that niches will really pay off if you are able to exploit them in a timely fashion. (i.e olympics is coming in 2008). Everyone and their brother will have a cell phone FINALLY logging on to the mobile web to get updates.... Although "the Olympics" is heavily TM'd and enforced... maybe a mobile site that offers destination stops, etc. I think the 2008 Olympics in China is going to do for the mobile web what Yahoo did for the "fixed" internet.
6. Addiction is almost certainly going to make it's way to the mobile web. Christ the thing is with you 24/7. Addiction plays into porn, gambling, shopping, gaming etc. Not a no brainer here, but certainly is something to think about. I'm thinking if you are at all industrious, why not set up "mobile stations" or "bars" where people could hang out to engage in their favorite addiction. There could be "battery" stations for patrons to use for a nominal fee.
7. Maps are huge on the fixed internet. Mainly because you could "print" the directions, then take them with you on your travels. Now we have the directions with us at all times. Unlimited advertising opportunities here.
8. Local search has taken off, but nothing compared to what it will be with the mobile internet. If the fixed internet helped us navigate the world with it's rich history and information, the mobile one will help us make sense of things in our own back yard. BE ON THE LOOKOUT... What does increased mobility mean for untapped opportunities out there?
9. Personality.... What makes anything "special" or stand "out". Originality. Nuff said.
10. And finally.... Sell things people want... Fill a need.... Don't assume what your audience wants... Do no evil... Do what you are familiar with... Find a passion...
