I would say these usually sell around High $xx - Low $xxx regularly.

Hmm, sounds like they placed a bid they didn't intend to fulfill in the first place. 500 bucks on a domain worth 3k isn't anything... Maybe they were hoping you would do that to void their initial offer.

Oh well. Try to get their contact info if possible so you can open a dialogue.
