Recently sold Block-Chain.com and I am amused about people thinking that Block Chain is one word

It never was one word
It is just habit or laziness

BlockChain originally Block Chain are 2 words

A blockchain,[1][2][3] originally block chain,[4][5] is a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography.[1][6] Each block typically contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block,[6] a timestamp and transaction data.[7]By design, a blockchain is inherently resistant to modification of the data. It is "an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way".[8] For use as a distributed ledger, a blockchain is typically managed by a peer-to-peer network collectively adhering to a protocol for inter-node communication and validating new blocks. Once recorded, the data in any given block cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks, which requires collusion of the network majority.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The more interesting topic is the awareness that blockchains are really only suitable for crypto-currencies with immutable records, and that most of the projects that purport to be blockchain based, would be more suitable as centralised database structures.

Now for a thought on the original question - a 'big end' is ( surprisingly ) a large end, but if you combine it into one word, it has a specific meaning. A bigend is the mainshaft end of a conrod. Similarly, a 'block chain' is a chain of blocks, but the single word blockchain has come to refer to the transaction stream of a crypto-currency.

Original it is 2 words

That’s the facts

Block chain is 1 word if you use it related to crypto world.
It does not matter if the noun consists of 2 or more words and if it's written separately or not.
It's a 1 word noun in cyrpto. If you say block chain is 2 words it will mean a different thing.

These are similar 1 word nouns:
New York, San Fransisco, United States, White House, United Kingdom, Black Sea, Near East, Far East and so on.
I hope you get the idea. Educate yourself.

Au contraire

Satoshi invented a Block Chain ❗

blockchain is a new word

the original is a combination of the word block and chain
so, the new word is 1 word

Compound words are real. It is not the end of the world or the end of the two worded use of block chain. Both will be valid well into the future. Two words become one all the time. Not all words get compounded. Still not even a "chainsaw" will be able to keep these two apart for long. Surprising that this is even being debated ... both are valid and true...

...meanwhile even more emojis are getting into the dictionary as we argue! Some heads should roll for this...

It is in the Oxford dictionary so now is a word. Like web master was two words until defined as one officially.

It's a new one word but previously two words

Words do not compound into one word instantly invalidating the two worded use.

Unfortunately language is defined by use.
accordingly
Both will be valid well into the future
as both will be in regular use for a long time to come.

All the required evidence was submitted on page one. The jury is NOT out on this, they all went home and the case has been closed ever since. Special thanks to @hookbox for the English lesson.

Despite the case being closed I hope this thread remains open. It will serve well to see which pros are best at ignoring facts. I for one am looking forward to further presentations of irrelevant data on this subject.

Let's beat this dead horse back to life, we are pros after all!

Trolling obviously, no sensible person would use Google Translate translating a word from German to English as 'proof'.

The wikipedia article cites the following sources for it's "originally block chain" statement:

1. https://www.mercatus.org/system/files/Brito_BitcoinPrimer.pdf which is
a random PDF which has a date of 2013 on it, which refers to the blockchain as two words throughout. We can disregard this as it was dated 2013 which is long after the original code was created. A random PDF is proof of nothing.

2. The source code of the "original bitcoin" which has a comment that has "block chain" written in it:
https://github.com/trottier/original-bitcoin/blob/master/src/main.h#L795-L803

However if you look at this forum post showing the code from back in 2008 the code refers to it as a 'timechain' in all places where it says 'block chain' in the "original code" https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=382374.0

So it is block chain, or is it timechain? I'd say it's neither - because it's known as the blockchain now.

There's no point in pretending that a comment in the code from years ago is the common parlance of today...

Actually, you've already furnihsed us a proof if it being a single (of the compund nature) word without even noticing it, as per your sourced wikipedia excerpt which clearly acknowledges a shift taking place by making a demarcation between it's original (read:prior) and a current use/status.

Technically it is and it was always 2 words

Simple - translate it to any language

BlockChain is a China of Blocks - 2 words ❗

It's a fallacy to use language-to-language translation in support of your argument, as there are many counter-examples that exist that could serve as a proof to the contrary showing the exact opposite being true as when, eg translating from Englsh to Swedish:

Midnight Sun
(2 words) - Midnattssol (1 word), and the examples are plenty...

... and a little bit down the line the word gets endorsement to be treated as having a dual status, framed by the validity given equally to the present and original usage from the same wikipedia entry:
A blockchain,[1][2][3] originally block chain,[4][5] is a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography.
