Under NameCheap, I'm updating my domains contact information and have just stumbled across INFORMATION FOR .US DOMAINS.

Nexus * ->
C11: A natural person shown is a US citerzen
C12: A natural person who is a Permenant Resident
C21: An entity or organization
C31: A forign organization
C32: Forign organization has an office in US

If you choose C31 or C32 above,
then please select country
->
Country List ...

Purpose * ->
P1: Business use for profit
P2: Non-profit business,assoc.,religious org., etc.
P3: Personal use.
P4: Educational purposes.
P5: Government purposes.

Now, my question here is: I'm in the UK, my contact information is in the UK, so I'm not sure what to select. Is it ok owning a .US domain (well 2) in the UK without having any association (offices, company, tm) with the US?

What would be the best purpose to select? Am I in any kind of risk?

Thanks,
Scott

You must abide by the nexus.

I have an american wife, and her kids live in the US, however, i live in the UK.

So I can get round it :)

So if I choose C31: A forign organization & P3: Personal use. I'd be ok?

Technically, you must have some US nexus to own a .us domain. (see Here )

Could you get a away with not having any?...Maybe, but you would take the risk that a US ciitizen would challenge you and you lose the domain. The higher profile the domain, the more likely this would happen. If it were a business and a US business saw you as a threat they probably would challenge. if it were your name or something, that probably wouldn't be likely.

I once inquired (as a US citizen) about challenging a .us registration that was seemingly all German with no apparent us nexus. At the time, the cost & trouble of doing so was more than I thought the name was worth. As .us names grow in value, that may not be a stumbling block.

To do so legitimately, you could start a legal entity (Corporation, LLC, etc.) in the US without ever visiting that would own the name. You would be subject to US tax laws though for the company.

I guess it's a question of risk and conscience. You could also partner with a person in the US to own the domain for a percentage of whatever you are doing with it.
