ccTLD I am new to all of this and I am trying to pick a domain name for a website

I am new to all of this and I am trying to pick a domain name for a website I want to create.

The main 2 versions of the name I want to use the .com are taken of course but I have other options I can use.

When I visit the main names that are .com they are parked and not being used for any purpose other than getting paid for the clicks.

The main mechanics of my website will be forum based and of course a few banner ads.

If I can’t get the .com I want how much of a difference if any at all will this make using another extension other than .com.

My domain will be mostly about a topic that is based out of California.

These are available: .co, .info, .us , .net and .org

Any help, thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If it's a forum, take the .net and build the site without any concerns. Google doesn't care about the extension any more, if you have good content it will rank good.

In most cases there is more to be concerned about than just google. If you are wanting to attract visitors by referrals/word of mouth or offline advertising the .com will make things a lot easier for you and your customers.

I would first look for a suitable .com within your budget before considering hand registering an alternative extension.

Ok now with that said, I want to create a forum as I said and we will just for fun say I want my forum to be for cooks in California.

Californiacook.com and californiacooks.com are both taken but as I was saying above I could use a different extension.

So in the opinion of others would it be better to use californiacooks.net verses using Californiakictchenengineer.com (I understand this example is not the greatest but what was trying to think of something).

Using California Cooks as my domain name even without .com I thought and understood it to be more beneficial because I am able to use the two main keywords as my domain name verses something else that is close in meaning California cooks and has a .com

.net would do if you cant find .com and as mentioned above by Shelby90, Google does not focus on the domain extension anymore. Good and unique content, no duplicate content, backlinks, meta tags are some major areas its focusing on.
And if you want to use a ccTLD or other TLD extension than go for it too, especially if you want to target local audiences along with .net extension. Like - californiacooks.us or californiacook.me

Thanks for the replies and information this is what I decided on. Started last night…

I was using Californiacook.com and Californiacooks.com as examples.

The name I was wanting was californianurse.com or californianurses.com

So I ended up getting westcoastrn.com and rncalifornia.com.

Last year my wife and I moved here to California and with her being a nurse she wanted to find info on some of the best hospitals to apply at. Not so much the highest paying Hospitals but from a nurses review what were some of the best Hospitals to work at as far as benefits, hours, overall happiness, etc…

There are over 450 hospitals and over 350,000 (Those were just some quick numbers I was able to find) Registered Nurses here in California and other then a few nursing forums that cover a broad spectrum of nursing I wanted to create a forum site that would be more focused towards a nurses opinion about their work place and why they like it or not like it etc… and just see if how it goes from there.

Any I was say I am new to all this so by all means if there is anything some of you pro's see that I am missing or something that might help me out please tell me....

Stuck on creating topics and sub topics at this point, the logo design took me a better part of the day...

I am looking at the site as hopefully I can make some extra cash from with my new Google Ad-sense account.

The wife is looking at as it something to do for her and be more involved with nursing stuff without working for someone or getting a second job etc...
