discuss Hyphen names on the rise?

I've been noticing hyphen names selling for a bit more lately. Any thoughts?

Hyphens are interesting. There is a guy @rumevic - he sells them on a regular basis (however lately I haven't seen much of him, probably he caught some stagnation, just like everyone else...). He sells them at around $1000, and that's I guess a very fair price. But indeed, it has to be popular niches - crypto, casinos, art, eco - and as @jhm said - some very ''delicious'' combinations as well ).
So, if digging into popular themes I guess there is a chance. I have around 40-50 and some are picking other extensions pretty fast...But indeed, I wouldn't go more than 1000 on them. x-day is not bad, imo. Mens-hair too (although, why mens only? But still I think it's OK).

Several hyphenated domains per month are being sold regularly.
Yes, for last two months sales went down frankly.
I normally post sales on Twitter and here on forum.
For my .coms now I decided to go back to $2k from $1k, will see how it goes.
Buying some and renewing some names, and letting many to expire though.

You'll always find these exceptions popping up. I wouldn't look too deeply into it. I just wouldn't bother with them, from an investment standpoint, unless it's an appropriately placed hyphen in the term. Otherwise, a strong combination (such as health-news, game-reviews, fact-check, insurance-quote, buy-crypto, good-life, sexy-girls, phone-repair, tax-help, watch-movies, learn-english, go-travel, get-fit, new-tech, food-recipes...)

I did an analysis on sale of domain names with hyphens in 2019, and then an updated analysis last year:

While vast majority of sales do not have a hyphen, it is also true that vast majority of names for sale do not. I look at ratio of both for .com, .org and .de. As expected, hyphens much more popular for .de.

Also, the Germans seem to have a liking for hyphenated names. Lots of Sedo sales data to back this up. In both .com & .de

Germans actually PREFER hyphenated. They take that as the first choice. I have sold many to Germans and yes, $1500 or so is the sweet spot for me.

I don't aim for them. Just that when my hyphenated sell, it is usually to Germans.

Almost all businesses use hyphenated domains. They don't even want "regular" names without hyphens.

When a company can't afford the proper domain they go hand reg the hyphenated, that is why if you have a strong domain go reg the hyphen, I had a case of a company using the hyphen, they try to buy my domain for cheap, then I have regret later not buying the hyphenated, now they would beg me to sell them in pair.

Good for Development , Not so much for end user, hardly good for flipping IMO. If you can build a hyphen up to where it holds traffic value, then people start looking at it. Hyphens are a very small targeted audience IMO

Hyphenated names, being inferior to their non-hyphenated versions, are generally unattractive from an investor's perspective (unless the keywords are very strong, as rightly mentioned above).
In my experience, they tend to under-perform.
End users who wish to use a .COM domain name for their business, sometimes opt to use the hyphenated version when the other option is taken.

It reminds me of coming across this banner by some reputable jeans brand, whose website uses a hyphenated domain "gloria-vanderbilt" (see bottom left) for their brand and they apparently don't even own the non-hyphen name - it's rare, and makes one wonder how much traffic they lose to it.

But, is there any possibility that simply a space rather than a hyphen may be offered as an additional alternative in the future?

Would any domain with the hyphen automatically get counted as having the backlinks, even if those links were generated for the version without the punctuation?

So, is it possible that eventually, instead of a hyphen, domain names with a space in between may be offered. That really could be a game changer---and probably worth buying into if someone is serious about a particular name.

No I did not mean that, I mean that companies will prefer the hyphen if they can't afford the non hyphenated domain, that is why it is good to have both or at least the hyphenated so you can sell it cheaper to the interested party.

I really wonder why anyone would pay such amount for b-and-t-world-seeds. Anyway I just dropped a nice 2 word hyphen domain, because I could not find a buyer for couple of years. But fortunately I had some parking revenue from this domain.
