Are you going to be buying more hyphen .COM domains in late 2019?

Just sold sushi-man.com from an Epik SSL lander for $4200. This is one of Epik's O&O domains. I don't normally report sales but these days we are routinely asking for $10K+ for good hyphen .COM names and seeing sincere engagement.

The great gTLD experiment has been run. I now routinely sell even ccTLD registrants are upgrading from their ccTLD to .COM if they can afford it. I was late to acknowledge it but the risk-reward equation for speculators overwhelmingly favors .COM.

When it comes to hyphenated .COM, SEO is your friend. I recommend to use SSL landers but any SEO lander will probably do the trick to drive inquiries.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Quick shoutout to @domainexpert77 who joined Epik last month and who is available to help folks with setting up their SSL landers. A hyphen domain can look hot too. Example:

https://crypto-hardware.com/

This is a free service. @domainexpert77 will be happy to give coaching about how to do this yourself, but folks with decent names that need some better landers, hit him up.

And yes, we are still buying hyphen names so PM those lists, or better yet email them [email protected].

Well said Rob.

If anyone needs to get their SSL Lander customized, feel free to contact me, I will be happy to walk you through the process

Here is a quick tutorial for how I figure out whether a hyphen domain is worth owning.

I will use an illustration of a domain I did not buy because it shows the difference with a few I did just buy this morning from someone who has become skills at finding hyphen domain.

Here is one one I did not buy: TLS-Solutions.com. Here is why:

upload_2019-10-25_6-24-22.png

If you look that one up, you will find very folks using the term, and essentially no examples of established organizations who would be logical buyers for the domain, e.g. as a URL shortener or replace some non-COM TLD.

On the other hand, here are 7 that I did agree to buy today:

Talent-Solutions.com
Transport-Consultants.com
Marine-Team.com
Ace-Creative.com
Invention-Marketing.com
Realty-Sales.com
Gourmet-Pizza.com

Here are 4 I bought yesterday:

Studio-Group.com
Condo-Experts.com
Gorilla-Digital.com
Furniture-Rentals.com

These are are hand registrations, which I am buying for more than reg-fee from someone who finds them and brings them to me. Sometimes I feel like the fish buyer waiting at the dock for the fishermen who are coming into harbor with their daily catch. It is a win-win as we help folks bootstrap their portfolios.

Of course anyone can do this too. If you want to sell hyphen domains to Epik, I suggest:

1. Find hyphenated .COM names that have obvious buyers. Product category names sound good but are usually not that great. For example, I would rather own Lucky-strike.com than Bowling-lanes.com, even though Bowling-lanes.com will appraise higher.

2. Register them at Epik. We don't like to mess around with external registrars. So, you will end up waiting 60 days to sell your inventory.

3. If you keep the domains, I strongly suggest that you do what I do. Activate the SSL landers on these domains immediately. For example:

https://studio-group.com/

I have this set up as an automated template so that incoming names get a Domain Profile which includes a marketplace listing.

For promising names, @domainexpert77 tunes them up with a custom graphic and some SEO content. He is happy to teach others so be nice to him and he will help you out too. He has a fast-growing Whats-App group where he is teaching people to fish.

Happy fishing. From what I am observing, there are plenty of nice catches to be had.

I like the broad user base point you stress, and I like your choices. I particularly like Furniture-Rentals, Studio-Group, Marine-Team, and Talent-Solutions. All superb names.

I like all your specific buys except Realty Sales which to me just does not sound right. I mean people talk of Property Sales or Home Sales or Condo Sales or many other things, but Realty is not quite the way I would say it even though a more general term (realize why the or ending is not used). But maybe it is just the way we speak in the Canadian north that is different :xf.grin: - probably most of the world does not say WeTheNorth!

Anyway thanks for the clear and helpful explanation with examples. I wish you the very best!

Thanks again,

Bob

Thanks Bob.

Many of the examples domains I just listed come from @CodingTheDomain who has apparently developed a method for finding these names with some efficiency.

As for Realty-Sales.com, that one was on the bubble. However, if you search the term, you will find a very large list of sites using this term. See:

It is a good way to know if you have a prospect, even if it sounds slightly off to the ear.

I recently acquired
Cbd-index (.) Com
Many domainers know about cbd but does the ordinary customer ? An index explaining all products containing cbd is a good idea in my opinion. Your thoughts guys.

Earlier today, @Kostas was kind enough to give me a suggestion for some names that riff off the word "solutions". I registered these:

equity-solutions.com
animal-solutions.com
hardware-solutions.com
heritage-solutions.com
beautiful-solutions.com
generator-solutions.com

If you search the terms, they all have obvious buyers.

All were hand-reg for $7.49 at Epik.

And yes, I did spiff @Kostas for a bounty as a courtesy for his courteous deed.

@domainexpert77 will tune up those landers a bit.

Why does it matter whether we have SSL landers or nonSSL landers. Seo is not about SSL, it is mostly about backlinks and content. There is too much emphasis on SSL, and maybe I miss something.
....
Sedo also has SSL landers, maybe all others as well, but they are not under domains they represent. They are under the marketplace's own domain. So maybe a better matching term would be nonredirect-landers.

Very obvious to see it Rob even on the first page itself half of the search result has the end user with these stuffs. Thanks for pointing it out @Rob Monster (y)

No it does not pass the radio test. How can it with the hyphen unless you say on the radio there's a hyphen in the middle and may even need to explain what a hyphen is. If you say it's a 'dash' some people may actually type the word DASH in the URL i.e. beautydashbars.com (that has happened to me).

You got me there.

But I will definitely take my chances.

Do a quick search and see who's talking about their "beauty-bars" and "beauty bars"

It might give you an advantage over regular http websites.

A few more from yesterday:
I appreciate that folks send lists. I am buying them wholesale, often newly registered domains at Epik. Why do do this?

1. I don't mind adding domains to our inventory and waiting for the retail buyer.

2. I am teaching people what to look for in domains that can sell, preferably at Epik on our platform.

3. I am providing bootstrap liquidity to people who might have more time than money.

If you don't have any money at all, just PM or email to [email protected] and we'll do a bounty for names we register. This way literally anyone can participate.

Were these in the two figure range or three Rob? If you can say.

Most hyphen hand-reg names are $30-50 each.

The above list were bounty names where @Jonathan Beadle brought a list and I paid $100 for the 7 I registered. I bought another one today for VOIP-exchange.com for $15, again as bounty. So, basically, the bounties are pure margin with no risk, and we basically do a bit of learning-by-doing. Here were the ones I rejected from the same source:

zone-management.com
nu-management.com
lease-management.com
private-management.com
contractor-management.com
infrastructure-management.com

orange-coding.com
purple-bricks.com
all-real.com
pro-mode.com
purple-days.com
velvet-paws.com

Some of these are marginal, like parent-coach.com and safe-weld.com. They might be attractive to someone. If folks register any of these, spiff @Jonathan Beadle.

You are right that Staffplus.com looks like a good deal at $1400 for one of the many folks with lesser names. I think the owner of Staffplus.com would do well to ditch their PPC lander that is probably making them peanuts and use an SSL lander instead.

We'll see which domain sells first. The non-hyphen domain has been parked for years. In my case, I can sell this hyphen name for $100 and add a full-service registrar client, which is why Make offer pricing is attractive as there are many viable scenarios:

1. Sell for a great price -- unlikely in this case but who knows.

2. Lease or finance for recurring income, e.g. even $10/month forever is a nice annuity.

3. Sell for cheap but gain an end-user client.

This is the same reason why we do escrow transactions for very low fees -- we often gain an enduser as a client for registrar and hosting.
