HUGE DOMAINS SNIPING GODADDY CLOSEOUTS

So annoying Godaddy hasn't stopped Huge Domains from sniping Godaddy Closeouts with their automated tools, no way a human bidder can win a even closeout.

First they were sniping with the backorders, now you cut that out, and you are letting them snipe via automated tools.

So what do you say @Joe Styler , you want to even the playing field a bit, as your partners are bidding everything in a split second, from $12, to $11, and bidding everything else into the hundreds from a simple bid. I would rather pay a Huge Domains surcharge at checkout.


Huge Domains has an unfair advantage on the auction platform, essentially taxing every user for using it with their automated access advantages given to them thru the house.

So, I've tried something new in the last 4-5 days. First of all, I'm done bidding against others. It just leads to frustration and high prices. And wastes mental bandwidth through the whole day. And, I no longer want to spend too much time or money on a declining domain market.

So, what I do now is only look for names with no bids and rather than bidding on them in the last five minutes, I wait to see if they go to $11. If they get bought by someone else--and about half seem to--I don't care. If they go to $11 I buy them then, or gamble to see if they go to $5.

I've picked up what I think to be very good names this way. And these are names that--while I cannot prove it--would have drawn HD into the bidding had I placed a bid while it was $12. What does this mean? Either 1) HD has a way to know what I--as someone who like the same names as them--bid on a name, or 2) HD see what names receive a bid and then decides if that is a name they want to bid on.

It's difficult to imagine that it is #1, because that would have all sorts of privacy and/or collusion problems. I have a feeling that the API does not show the competing bidder numbers during the bidding process. (If anyone has access to the API docs, PLEASE look it up and let us know). So while I like to "feel" it's #1, I think it's more likely #2.

Anyway, I spend way fewer hours of frustration waiting for auctions and the subsequent bidding wars, I spend less time looking for names each morning, and I am spending way less money, increasing my cash flow.

If I'm not mistaken, this is about domain name auctions, this is about auctions to run the registry for new gTLDs. These are one-time affairs to run the registry, that could be in he hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

This also has been discussed. It is a win-win and numbers game for HD and GD. Specific auction doesn't matter. They are happy to overpay for 10-20% of auctions paying 7%-12% of appraised value and helping GD earn money. They also win some auctions at 1%-6% range as well, let's say another 10-20%. This all help GD. For another 10-20%, HD loses, but forces the winner pay over 12%. So HD spends zero on those, but helps a partner greatly, as GD might have just made 12$ on those names.

But for remaining names, HD gets to snap them at just $11 as a payback via special access to api and first access through being in the same building or superior backend or something else.

As a bonus, HD also discourages the competition as the names that would have ended up with others would mean better returns for them and more funds to spend on names...

That is not how the math works.

Let's say they own 5 million names (probably way more now).

They need $42.5 million to pay renewals for those annually.

Let's say their average net per name is $2500.

They need to sell 17000 names/year to break even and another 1000 names for other expenses, like staff, office etc. So 18000 is there minimum. That is equivalent of the sell through of 0.36%.

Anything above is pure pretax profit.

I am sure they do WAY better than that, probably in 1.0% to 1.5% range, given also that they offer payment plans for 12 months interest free and that they get the first dip at the auctions and closeouts...

So their profit is anywhere from $50 million to 100 million a year.

Lots of cash to burn for more names, don't you think?

I studied over 700 names they won, in almost 90% of the cases its 2 word names with less than 13 characters (I only tracked .com names, no character limit, ignored those with digits or hyphens).

We know from DropCatch that they are good at displaying names properly, almost nobody does this. Most sites show domains as domainsale they automatically show DomainSale. Doing this lets you see how many words a domain has (its mostly accurate). There are many libraries to do this including in python and for those of you that have a list and want to do it in bulk without coding you could use this free tool https://www.expireddomains.net/tools/camel-case-domain-names/

My guess is they generate a list of names based on a criteria and look at their internal sales history and the sales history by godaddy etc for that name or similar names plus whatever other data they have like search volume, backlinks, ppc and they set a max what they will pay.

I suspect although this could be confirmed to some extent that they only bid in the last 5 minutes if someone else does and if nobody does they buy the closeout. If they do bid they place their max bid and move on (when I got into the bidding wars it was never them, I always check a week later, but this does not mean they don't do a back and forth).

I only wait for closeouts if im ready to lose the name and in most cases I am. Sometimes the name hitting closeouts makes the name less exciting and I end up waiting a few days and at the end I don't even buy it just to get excited again when I see it popup on the pending delete and again I see nobody registering it. I start questioning if I know what im even doing if these names I worry about are being ignored.

That would be too risky, unless somehow masked into some loyalty program, rewards etc. Like spend $10MM with us and get $1MM back.

The point is that HD can get 500K names from GD at let's say $50 apiece average, as for every name it gets at low $xxx it gets few at $11.

So $25MM spent, 5000 names selling a year at $2.5k, $12.5MM a year revenue minus $4.25MM renewals, net 8.25MM, about 35% return. Not bad at all.

Meanwhile if they would have invested 10MM in GoDaddy stock when it came out their total account value now would be 28MM

I think in a year they get maybe 30,000 names from GD, figure what im tracking I am seeing them average 25 names a day so even if you add many closeouts and other names 80 x 365 = 29.2k
