How to tell if a keyword is too competetive?

Hey all,

When keyword researching with the google keyword tool, how can I tell if a market is too competitive and would probably take waaaay to long to rank - if I am even able to rank at all.

Are there any guidelines or rule of thumbs you guys use? Thanks a lot!

install SEOquake plugin in your firefox browser, enter your search query in google, and check the Page Rank for each of the top 10 site results. It's very tough to win the niche if most of the top sites are PR 4 or more.

As a rule of thumb, you can check the average CPC on google keyword tool. The more expensive it is, naturally the niche is very competitive.
