How important is it to have a keyword domain name?

I've been reading a number of articles on keyword domains all of which pretty much say that keyword domains are the way to go.

I appreciate that you obviously need content and incoming links but my initial goal is to develop a number of keyword domain mini sites say a couple of pages max and see how I get on.
