I wonder if there is any way how to find out if an expiring domain has been backordered by someone or no. I'm asking, because there is an expired domain name (it's currently in the redemption period) that I'm interested in. I could backorder it, but I do not want pay $60 if I can have it for $8. Therefore I'd like to know if someone has already backordered it or not.

I have not backordered the domain yet. I just wonder if it is possible to find out if someone has already backordered it? If no, I will wait until the domain is available to register again and I'll then register it for $8.

Actually, I'm in the same boat. I found a name on an "expired" list, and the date it is supposed to expire is toady. I've been checking availability about every hour or so. I'd love to find out when exactly is will be available for reg, so I can grab it, unless someone has it back ordered. I'd love to pick this one up for reg fee. Small chance, but a chance none the less.

You can find out on godaddy by trying to backorder the domain. If you can backorder it, then it has not been backordered yet because only 1 person can backorder a domain name. If you get a "already backordered" msg, you know it's been backordered already. Note: On GoDaddy, you can withdraw a backorder. So once you find out, you can withdraw it.

You can also find out on eNom by backordering it, then checking to see if the highest bid is greater than the default bid amount ($60). So, if the bid is $65, and you didn't bid $65, you'll know someone else has. You can also withdraw a backorder from eNom.

As far as I know, you can't find out if it's been backordered on Pool or SnapNames.

99% of domains that expire are either backordered, or snapped up by domain tasters. Most of the "tasted" domains eventually end up scrapped by the tasters a few weeks after they drop.... So, if you want to risk it, you can wait and see if the tasters keep it, or let it expire. If you really want the domain, and it has value, you should prob backorder it (or buy it in a pre-release auction, depending on the registrar).

Thank you tripleputt for your informative reply. Yes, I want the domain, but I cannot afford investing $60 into a domain name purchase currently. I'm checking the Whois of the domain every day, so maybe I'll have luck.

tripleputt, nice info. I actually went to Godaddy to backorder, and the name said "not available", wouldn't let me backorder it. Anyone have any ideas on that. Maybe because it's pending delete?

Thanks

According to tripleputt post it means it has been backordered already.

I wrote an article about this on my site, and when I checked GoDaddy's backordering system (about 3 weeks ago), the exact wording they give you is "Domain has already been backordered."

If it says something else, then I'm not exactly sure what it would mean...

No worries. I would recommend you place a godaddy backorder for it. Instead of checking the whois manually, they will do it for you, and will register it as soon as it becomes available. It's only $20, which includes 1 year of registration. If you don't get the domain, then you could always use the backorder credit on a different domain. It could take weeks before the tasters let it drop...

I didn't know it costs only $20 to backorder a domain with GoDaddy. So I'm going to backorder it, but... I've seen a similar thread on DP forums and someone says there that Pool wins 99% of the domain drops (from his own experience). I see your reply in that thread, too (if your nick is dataminer). :)

So what do you think of that? I'm willing to invest $20 in that domain name, but not more. However, if there is only 1% chance, then I wouldn't invest even $20.

Pool.com does snap up the majority of good expiring domains... but not all of them. The domains that are not backordered are snapped up by domain tasters. Something like 90% of tasted domains are eventually let go. Godaddy's backorder service is ideal for catching the tasted domains that are let go.

So, you'll need to decide:

a) Is the domain good enough to be snapped up by a Pool backorder?
b) If not, what are the chances the domain will be let go by the tasters?

The answers should give you an idea of the likelihood of capturing it through a godaddy backorder.
