How much does it cost a registrar?

I'm curious as to why registrars vary in their pricing a new domain registration so much.

I'm not sure how a registrar becomes a registrar, but do they pay some organization an fee when a domain is registered?

i.e. It cost a registrar $5 per domain, so they charge $14 to the customer to make a profit ?

 

Greetings friend. I am buying domains at 8,13€ at godaddy.com for a normal unregistered domain, hope it helps.
