How hard would a business directory be?

Hey guys i was just wondering how hard it would be to build a busienss directory?
i know the basic of php and can make news scripts using PHP and MYSQL, so i know the basic of those two

i want to build a web directory that business can add there business details etc, have the options of paid version and non paid users etc, have all the listings listed in Categories/SubCategories etc, allow the user to have the ablity to edit there listings, and search function though out the whole site, etc

so does anyone know how hard this would be, if there are any tutorials that will be help full, or if there are any good scripts around that does this, or any help would be great

have you tried http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/ ? you don't need to re-build the wheel again so to speak it's just there, and yeah the hard work comes in submitting daily your site to different directories and getting people to link back (the hardest)

hey, yea ive looked at that site, and though the demo and wat not, but it just doesnt seem to have what im looking for,
im lookin at make a small business out of this and releasing a Newspaper directory of the business each month, and supplin it free around town, with the phplinkdirectory, when u go to the links it goes to the page, when i want it so it goes to an info page about the business etc, i dnt know if u guys under stand want im on about but wll give it a go

i never though about MODS, i mite download and instal this on my computer sever and play around with it....

It's a big challange to get a succesfull business directory. The reason being is that there is way too much competition. I have seen lists of 1000s of business directories.

What can you offer that they can not? If you get the answer to that then you have an advantage, but then you have to get your directory known.

it will only be a local directory, will contain business from only my town, and it will realease a newpaper directory to the public monthy, and its cost will be cheaper than any others, cus there is only one which is the yellow pages......

yeah i know. if you have WHM access. login to WHM and then
click on "Software" and then "apache update"
click on "load previous config" and then under "php module" make sure you chck on GD and then click on "Start Build" wait for a while for it to finish. then you're done. HTH

good for you man, you found your niche and it's highly targetted and you know your boundaries. so to market it as well a local newsletter/newspaper ad is very beneficial for you.

That sounds like a very good plan. Have you looked into how much it will cost to do the newspaper and get it delivered to places etc?

If your looking to take this real seriously I may have another suggestion for you which will make your directory with an even greater advantage.

What is WHM? i dnt know if i have access to that

web hosting manager or find someone in your network that has access or contact your hosting provider to install GD support for you. well link spamming will start after your site gets listed on search engines and get famous people will start to bombard it with links but for now it will do, you can enable GD support either pre installation of phpld or post installation of it, all you have to do is disable it first on phpld control panel to not use GD support.
