How do you learn more about a name's history?

Hello again,
I know that once a name has been registered you can use WHOIS to learn of the date it was registered. Here I learn how long the name has been in existence, at least by the current owner. But what if the name has been deleted from the registrar, you can no longer use WHOIS to gather info on it. Are there any other sites or tools someone can use to learn of a name's background (how many times it's been registered, when it was first registered or for how long, etc)?

Thank you.

There's an excellent service called DomainTools for this. They have basic WhoIS lookups, as well as a Domain History portion, where you can look at records dating back several years (I've seen them going as far back as 2001.

I believe it's one of the premium parts of their site, meaning you have to have a certain number of units in your account in order to these types of lookups. I pay the monthly subscription (which I think is round $15) because I use the site all the time.

You can also see archived snapshots of what a website looked like over the years at the Wayback Machine - web.archive.org.

Hope this helps.
