How do you determine traffic for a domain?

I have been getting into looking at the expired/deleted domains lists recently and am wondering how you measure the amount of traffic a domain gets. What are good tools to use and what values are good to look for?

For instance, I've read posts of people saying that using the AdWords Keyword Tool is good when you use "exact" and look at the Approx. Average Search Volume. Is this similar to type-in traffic? What is a good minimum number to look for?

Others say look at Alexa ranking, Wordtracker numbers and Overture numbers, but these are either quite low or non-existent for most of the domains on these lists. I'm not sure how you are supposed to gauge anything from them when this is the case.

I also hear many people refer to type-in traffic. I know what this is, but how do you measure this? Are there certain tools or sites that do this and if so, what are these and what are good numbers to look for?

I know that traffic is the main thing for a domain and I want to make sure I understand what I'm looking for and how to interpret the data. I appreciate the help! :)

setup a page on it, and redirect the traffic temporarily usually within 24 to 48 hours is ok, put up statcounter.com and google analytics and another 3rd stat tracker for second and third opinions.

He's asking about pre-purchase traffic analytics, which can be tricky, to say the least. You can look at measures such as Compete and Quantcast, along with direct search traffic (extensions are key here, so it's only reliable for .com) to get an idea.

Here's a guessing game.

Rrapidshare/com, guess it's traffic? :)

I'm open to free and paid services. I just want to know what exactly are the best things to look at and how to best interpret the data.

And, can someone explain better what to look for with the Keyword Tool that I mentioned in the first post (if in fact this is a good tool to use to help measure traffic)?

You could check Alexa or Compete.com. There's no way to actually know how much traffic a domain gets, but another indicator is backlinks.

People like to use OVT, WordTracker, Google Adwords, etc. to get an idea of what type-in traffic would be. A lot of web surfers type SearchPhrase.com into their browser instead of typing "Search Phrase" into a search engine. Therefore, if there is a high search frequency, there is also a high probability that you'll get visitors typing it in directly. How many you'll get is a complete guessing game though.

If they are expired look at the age & the number of incoming links. My favourite IBL checker is http://www.online-utility.org/webmaster/backlink_host_ip_analyzer.jsp

Also search for the domain itself in Google (with and without the www).

It's always a gussing game but the more of above, in general the more traffic

caveat: this measures expected traffic from an expired domain. Over time links will die off & people will forget the website.

Not worth it IMO. Those give inaccurate results. But you can get an estimated number of visitors.

Honestly, I don't think so. I have a site that gets about 500 hits a day but statbrain is stating that it gets close to 5k. If that was the case I would be spending more time trying to monetize it then piddling around with other stuff.

Experience is the only way really, and even then you should still consult several places to guage it. I use overture results, alexa and quantcast, as well as google keywords and look at all of these factors combined. If you have a domain which is showing good traffic in all these places, you can be pretty sure that it gets some good hits.
