Hi,

How would one determine domain name value ? What do you look for ? What turns you on to a specific domain name ? What turns you off ? Comments and opinions are welcome.

Thanks

There are MANY factors involved in determining potential value of a domain name. One of the main factors I use is recent sales comparabes. This you can find at namebio.com

However if the domain is getting lots of traffic - value can go up quite a bit. Often traffic domain names values are determined by the amount of revenue their are generating.

Also Link Popularity, Page Rank, DMOZ Listed, ect can all add value to a domain name. Dont forget hot technologies or industries also boost value. I would recommend talking to some active posters in the appraisals section. Im sure they would be more than happy to explain how they come to their valuations.

if you are new to the game, the only chance you have is to find new terms and new technologies.

Thats mostly true, but not entirely. Some of my best sales have come from dropped domains that I saw end-user potential for. Obviously it's not 1995, so pickings are slim, but there are some diamonds in the rough to be had. Well, assuming you're not looking to make millions :)

My best advice for domaining is if you have the money or skills, website development is your best option to making tons of money. If you have lots of money to invest to start out, obviously you can still find some good deals on premium domains. If you have no skills and no money, then it will be hard. You either need to develop some great sources for finding emerging trends before others or have a creative mind to spot domains that others have overlooked that have potential. Without money to invest though, it's more of a hobby. Also, do lots of research on domaining, read these forums for at least a month before registering any domains. You'll be better off having the basics down before you lay your money down :)
