How do names get indexed on Google?

I have been much more a domainer than a developer so far, so I`d like to ask this question.

As far as I know there are 2 categories of DN :

1) type in like :

CASINO.COM , BUSINESS.COM , REALESTATE.COM

2) non type in like:

MyBanking.com
TheGreatHoliday.com
OneRedPaperclip.blogspot.com

The difference between them is that the first ones get type in traffic while the second ones need to gain traffic from scratch.

But how does Google decide which one to put first when there are many similar domains referring to the same keyword, like for CASINO :

mycasino.com
yourcasino.com
thecasino.com
bestcasino.com

and what about same names but different extensions?

mycasino.com
mycasino.net
mycasino.info
mycasino.org

What I`m trying to understand is if buying anything else than the real generic (casino in the example) would be just worthless.

There are then the hyphenated names that seem lately are getting increased attention.

How Google decide which one to put first between:

GIRL.COM & G-I-R-L.COM (if Rick Schwartz got this one....maybe it`s worth to discuss it?)

Thanks anyone :)

domain names only play one part in the whole ranking scheme of search engines. getting to the first page of serps usually requires much more than a solid domain name - it requires search engine optimization, which deals with many things such as keywords in content, html tags, and linking structure.

in general, extensions don't play that big a role when it comes to search engine optimization.

Hi Shockie :) thanks for you answer.

So, would you be able to rate in order of importance the different things that an URL would need to finish in the 1th page of results?

Thank you

there are no guarantees that a website will rank on the first page from simply having its main keywords in the domain. in other words, simply having a keyword-strong url is usually not enough.

if possible, you should try to get the main keywords of interest in the domain, but you will have to balance that with how marketable the domain is. i have seen some websites with three hyphens rank on the first page of serps, but they are far from marketable.

I understood that, that`s why I asked which is , in your opinion , the list , in order of importance of things that it would required to have in order to be in the first page and so get more traffic?

i would say quality content, strong links, and title tags.

also note that every seo "things" are more effective when other seo "things" are put to work in conjunction with the rest. that is, an seo strategy is greater than the sum of its parts.

Thank you , rep on your way :)

Sorry that I used the word "things" but I`m not a native English speaker :)
