Just got an email from Hostgator one of the leading hosting company, they now want to tap in domain name business and clearly target Godaddy as their competitior. Will be launch in 2011 according to their message.

Do you think that's good for price could decreased with coupons...

Will you think people will switch from GD to HG?

I think GD should also do some more professional hosting services to stay in the race but it will be harder because hosting business is not as easy to manage as domain registrar.

I'm sure that HG have notice most of their domains DNS where coming from GD and see there potential business to make from doing real registrar service.

There was a thread on this not too long ago. They were claiming to compete with pricing, but didn't offer a discount club or anything to bring them close to potential pricing.

I think there .com's started at $15 or so.

Maybe they meant that they would be competing against Network Solutions ha.

Domain Name Pricing

.COM $15.00 /yr
.ORG $15.00 /yr
.NET $15.00 /yr
.BIZ $19.95 /yr
.INFO $19.95 /yr
.CC $49.95 /yr
.TV $59.95 /yr
.WS $49.95 /yr
.NU $49.95 /yr
.BZ $49.95 /yr
.US $19.95 /yr

If those prices are correct they are damned expensive, 20x what Godaddy charge on .info for the first year and more than double after that.

And they hope to compete??!

As they taking the mick?

Those are their current prices as an eNom reseller, but they recently bought an ICANN-accredited registrar and will soon be offering their domains through there instead. The new site will be Launchpad.com (not to be confused with Launchpad.net ;)). Right now, it looks like a generic LogicBoxes site with prices that are still kind of high, but I would assume they're going to lower those before going live if they intend to compete with GoDaddy.

The one is well-known web hosting provider and the second one provides cheap domain registration services.

How do they compete?

GoDaddy has built trust with me and I will be sticking with their great service.

I am sure hostgator will do in their own right as some people will want to host their domains with them.

I feel that I have brand loyalty with godaddy.

I'm really perplexed at how capitalism works in this domain registration business.

I mean, how can anyone offer 34.95 dotcoms and stay in business, when a competitor is offering it at 11 bucks, slashed to 7 bucks with promos?

Ok fine, so most of these high-priced registrars cater to enterprise-level establishments. Which makes it all the more that we shouldn't make an apple-apple pricing comparison between registrars that cater to the enterprise, versus those that cater to the rest of the mass market.

I have had a reseller hosting account with HG for 4 years now and if they can get their domain business running as smoothly and competitively as their hosting division they should be good.

I think they will try and give the domaining community price breaks as well.... and they have access to a very large hosting clientele that will be a big help when they launch...imho

Don't get perplexed...it isn't worth it. Just go to the registrar that gives you the best combination of price and service/support that meets your expectation. If HG meets your criteria they get your business..if not they don't.

Domain registrars are free to charge what they want and people are free to not pay what they don't want. That's free enterprise (kind of a simplistic interpretation I know).

Also again this sparks the same old debate about the disadvantages of having domains and hosting with the same company. Many people may not want to do so.

I know the freedom to choose part. What i meant was, price competition has always been a business killer. Why there are registrars that can charge astronomical reg fees, and still get a customer, is perhaps similar to going to another country - if you are a foreigner, the local cab will charge you 3 times what a local would pay for and yet the cab ride is exactly the same. It's like Bernie Madoff wouldn't mind paying 200 dollars for a cheeseburger.

So that's probably the difference between Godaddy and Network Solutions (and Hostgator), they cater to different heeled customers.

Yes, i think that argument has already become a textbook basic guideline: never register a domain with the same company that hosts your website for that domain.

If you make Hostgator angry, both your website and your domain will be toast.

good luck competing with Bob and his brand... Some how I disagree host gator is any way a threat to the world's largest registrar and hosting company, but it's always worth a shot!

recently, without warning I received notice from hostgator that it disabled two of my sites because it is consuming too much cpu resource. The sites in question have not had new contents for years and should not have high cpu load in my opinion. Since I had the domain registered at godaddy, I was able to switch the hosting to another company. Anyway, if hostgator has your domain as well and disable it, then you are in bigger trouble.

Well, Hostgatorโ€™smain motto, as far as I know, was to come up with a competitive price. However, until now, we have not seen a significant initiative from their side to come up with a noticeable discount! It seems that they have started a .com site recently and I think they are intending to make their claims come true through this site and not the former one. But then again, how much of a discount we are going to get is yet to be found out!

Generally speaking, it's not a good idea to put all your eggs in the same basket (domains and hosting)

But I would imagine that you should be okay in this case. HostGator has without a doubt, built itself a reputable brand. I don't see them messing that up, by suspending your domain because of issues with your hosting account. (Maybe if your domain is affiliated with questionable content.)

Also, the fact that HostGator's domain brand (LaunchPad?) is an accredited registrar, you should be able to (hopefully) settle disputes quickly. Otherwise ICANN can always be contacted.

HostGator being a direct competitor of GoDaddy? Perhaps with time... it's not going to happen over night though. :)

HostGator make it extremely easy to open accounts, but extremely difficult to close them. I think putting your domains with HostGator is going to be asking for trouble, imho.
