Great keyword, bad exstension. What would the Pros do?

Hi all,


just wondered what a pro would do in this scenario: you find an available domain. Now, the domain is composed of an absolutely awesome keyword. One word, amazing. But the extension is both quite obscure and expensive.

Just as an example, let's say it's poker dot sg (Singapore)

What would the experts out there do?

Just interested in your opinions.

This is a really good question. For me, if the extension wasn't too expensive (whats expensive?) then I'd buy it....especially if it was Poker.

I'll assume that absolutely awesome means its an awesome word like poker, sex, business or dating. If it is and its not stupid expensive...do it.

Worst case scenario, you burn a small amount of money for a great lesson.

It depends on the keyword. I had Computers.vc and sold it for a little over $200. But I also had own.sc and couldn't sell it for $30.

If it's one of the biggest keywords (sex, cars, business, movies, music, poker etc) then get it. Even poker with the worst ext would net at least $500. If it's not a popular term, tread lightly. The less popular a term, the less likely you should pursue it.

If it's mad expensive and worth so much why didn't someone else buy it before you?

Use the old adage - if you are at the poker table and can't tell who the sucker is... it's you.

What about .co.uk? That's a pretty useful TLD

Plus .info ranks better for information websites than .tv ?

Of course, it depends on the domain's use. But for development, I'd much prefer (say) Poker.co.uk compared to PlayPokerNow.net

I think it's best to avoid the most exotic tlds (like .vc, .io, .ws etc.), but co.uk, .de, .in, .eu, and tlds like these are very good extensions both for developers and investors.

It's hard to do research on this stuff. Need a long list of identical names with different tld's that have sold recently.

I wonder where a site like Namebio gets their raw data from.

Well, "sex" and "business" are two generic english keyword pretty known all over the world, and then even on .mx they could have value.

But it's rare. There are few words with the power of "business" or "sex".
