news Google uses a .XYZ for their new parent company Alphabet - the Internet melts

Multiple news outlets are reporting that "Google" has decided to change their parent company name to "Alphabet" and has launched it on the domain ABC.XYZ.

I have seen many companies that operate multiple businesses under one umbrella and also use terrible domains without ever intending to own the exact match .COM - but for Google, this move is surprising.

It’s a win for Daniel Negari and selling one of the few domains that the .XYZ registry is good for: the alphabet. The other being abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvw.xyz

I think Google summed it up by saying, "[we make] smaller bets in areas that might seem very speculative or even strange when compared to our current businesses.”

As this story unravels, I’m sure Mr. Negari will have a larger role to play within Alphabet, possibly even heading their .google extension when Google decides that we should all be using a .google instead of .COM.

Speculation for a speculative move.

From the announcement G is for Google:
What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google . . . companies that are pretty far afield of our main Internet products [will be] contained in Alphabet instead.
Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc. as the publicly-traded entity and all shares of Google will automatically convert into the same number of shares of Alphabet, with all of the same rights. Google will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet. Our two classes of shares will continue to trade on Nasdaq as GOOGL and GOOG.
Don’t worry, we’re still getting used to the name too!

Your thoughts?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is the result of lessons learned from Google's failed "Google Plus" project. They're slowly phasing out Google Plus and probably realized that it's better to launch projects outside of the Google-verse, so that if they fail they're isolated, individual companies not tied to their most important business (search / advertising).

Exactly. Add to that the legislative problems they have with EU and probably other countries as well and it makes a lot of sense for them.

On the money. Read about how they secretly set up as a car manufacturer:

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/aug/01/google-auto-car-making-company

Google has set up its own car company. The tech giant has flirted with major car firms as it explores driverless cars but has also quietly set up its own auto company, according to documents obtained by the Guardian.

The only reason they used .xyz is because of the Alphabet... which is their new company name. Don't bet on .xyz getting big after that and as some pointed out, not mentioned in most articles.

There seems to be a serious landrush on .xyz names right now, so whether real or perceived, there is some demand. It may (and probably is) domainers who are jumping in, but for a while this may make this a relevant extension.

It's okay with XYZ names $1 each they're only losing $1 with each one.

Exactly the point, the domain name makes sense to their venture, as with any other GTLD.

This is not a landmark moment at all.

Yeah, I meant for hand regs, not purchases (although apparently some people seem to be thinking that way).

That Forbes article \ post does not say anything we have not seen before. You could write that article and say you should get "driftaway" com and then you will be more successful.

Seems like people are bidding at NameJet too. Currently many bids between 100-250 dollars. I will follow the trend there closely (I've also started a separate thread).

And now...Forbes is encouraging regging .xyz and other new gTLDs. http://www.forbes.com/sites/susanpr...en-do-what-google-did-and-try-a-not-com-name/

-

Anu Menon, co-founder of Driftaway Coffee, says one of the best things about their domain, driftaway.coffee, is how it kickstarts conversations. “We tell people we are on the coffee domain, and they haven’t heard about it, and that starts a conversation and helps people remember us,” she says.

Lmao

Have you noticed how the story writers who have been touting alternate TLDs for as long as they have been available, have stopped short of adopting them ? Of course, they already have their domains, but for new ventures they should at least give it a try right ?

I'm afraid i won't be drinking the kool-aid this time.;)

If you have to even say "my domain name is in the ??? TLD" then you have already started on a steep uphill slope. But then those that have used a gtld will justify it until they fall asleep.

When a make a website for a client (I am in italy) I use only .com .it and .eu, my biggest concern for commercial project and new domains is just about "continuity", I really don't know if new domains will be sustainable in the long run, so for me is logical to suggest to the customer something that will last almost without any doubt. But if google did it maybe I didn't understand a shit.

the most interesting thing is that developpers don't ask themselves if they have an education or experience in 'marketing' and / or naming when they are giving advice to siteowners, in general the decision is made by the owner, but what if they hire a consultant in naming ? things are becoming complex and maybe it's time to ask to go to see a namer then come back with the name and not just say :'ok, let's invent a name'.... ? instead investing in a cool webdesign and fix security would be better....

Alphabet.com does not resolve, but belongs to BMW.

Want to bet some discussions are taking place between G and BMW?

G: We see you have the domain alphabet.com

BMW: Yes.

G: We are using abc.xyz but that might be nice as a redirect to us - would you take $5000 for it?

BMW: not for sale.

G: $5,000,000

BMW: not for sale.

G: $10,000,000

BMW: not for sale - might use it for our self-driving cars.

G: remember that time when BMW got a huge Google penalty for black-hat SEO? Tough when nobody can find you...

btw, BMW are supposed to maximise returns to shareholders.

Funny I wrote a post today

We may have jumped the shark as a world wide regging spree of Alphabet related new gtlds is sweeping the net.

The first 5 names I checked were all regged yesterday:

Alphabet.domains

Alphabet.Holdings

Alphabet.Media

Alphabet.Tech

Alphabet.Wtf

Add to the list Alphabet.sexy, is the Alphabet sexy ? How about Alphabet.photo ?

Well it makes sense to think that Google being a company that tries to be socially responsible will eventually roll out a green related division. So Alphabet.Green is available go have some fun.

ABC.green was available for $79 on Name.com, now the name is registry reserved just changed after the article. Funny stuff.

Not everything Google touches, turns to gold. For all its successes, take stock of tens of products and services Google shut down for lack of market acceptance. The Internet is bigger than a major company naming itself differently. XYZ just means 'whatever' - if used in common parlance. It won't make a dent in 25 odd years worth of .com domination. Remember the noise .me created a few years ago...

Isn't Google running an invite-only domain registrar? Perhaps, it's trying to induce some demand.

However, due to renewal fees, I predict this "demand" will be short-lived.
