news Google uses a .XYZ for their new parent company Alphabet - the Internet melts

Multiple news outlets are reporting that "Google" has decided to change their parent company name to "Alphabet" and has launched it on the domain ABC.XYZ.

I have seen many companies that operate multiple businesses under one umbrella and also use terrible domains without ever intending to own the exact match .COM - but for Google, this move is surprising.

It’s a win for Daniel Negari and selling one of the few domains that the .XYZ registry is good for: the alphabet. The other being abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvw.xyz

I think Google summed it up by saying, "[we make] smaller bets in areas that might seem very speculative or even strange when compared to our current businesses.”

As this story unravels, I’m sure Mr. Negari will have a larger role to play within Alphabet, possibly even heading their .google extension when Google decides that we should all be using a .google instead of .COM.

Speculation for a speculative move.

From the announcement G is for Google:
What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google . . . companies that are pretty far afield of our main Internet products [will be] contained in Alphabet instead.
Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc. as the publicly-traded entity and all shares of Google will automatically convert into the same number of shares of Alphabet, with all of the same rights. Google will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet. Our two classes of shares will continue to trade on Nasdaq as GOOGL and GOOG.
Don’t worry, we’re still getting used to the name too!

Funny I wrote a post today

We may have jumped the shark as a world wide regging spree of Alphabet related new gtlds is sweeping the net.

The first 5 names I checked were all regged yesterday:

Alphabet.domains

Alphabet.Holdings

Alphabet.Media

Alphabet.Tech

Alphabet.Wtf

Add to the list Alphabet.sexy, is the Alphabet sexy ? How about Alphabet.photo ?

Well it makes sense to think that Google being a company that tries to be socially responsible will eventually roll out a green related division. So Alphabet.Green is available go have some fun.

ABC.green was available for $79 on Name.com, now the name is registry reserved just changed after the article. Funny stuff.

Interesting:

The leasing and fleet management company, owned by BMW, told Fleet News: “The possibility of any trademark infringement is currently under review.”

The leasing company’s website – www.alphabet.com – struggled to initially cope with traffic after Google announced the new parent company’s name, with people mistakenly thinking the car leasing site was something to do with the tech company.

Full article: Trademark concerns after Google names new parent company Alphabet

Initially? Alphabet.com is still struggling to load as of this post, 24 hours after the announcement.

I won't be surprised if they ditch the domain later on, especially as their own extensions go live.
Then the cheerleaders will scramble to downplay the withdrawal of the *only* prominent .xyz end user.

While I think people shouldn't spend too much $ on random xyz domains just because of Google uses one of them, but:

I just sold one .xyz for $200 :-o

It's 2 word brandable name (let's say aaaabbbb.xyz), I bought it for myself and never used it (I was planning to drop it in December).
The buyer has aaaabbbbccccc.com (he was the one who contacted me)

Could I get more? maybe? But I suck at haggling so... mmmmh yeah...

Still, not bad return of investment on domain that I only got for s**t and giggles...

You and some others still haven't explained, how in the world is this supposed to help "other new gtlds"?

In the first place, a lot of people will not have been aware of the new domains before now. This brings awareness.

For internet professionals, it will be seen that if Google uses a new generic domain, then they must be ok and "makes it alright" for them to use them too. Equally if they are trying to sell a new generic domain to a client, they can say "Google uses them".

With the whole world taking about new generic domains, you tell me how that will *not* help them!

Of course it will

I like your confidence!

it's basic math. .xyz is 117 million regs behind. I just posted that .com yesterday is picking up more than .xyz on the same day. .coms closest competitor, .net, is 103,000,000 regs behind .com. Really think about that one.

If you are saying that .com is the most popular domain today, I don't think anyone would give you an argument but that's not the point of this discussion. The point is that Google registered a .xyz when they could easily have got a good .com which for a lot of people will rightly show that there is some value in the new domains.

And do you think one of these generics are better than .net? .click, .link, .xyz?

Way, way better. Just last week I was walking past a car in London that had a .london domain on it. Looked great. It was for a London property site. Would have looked terrible with a .net

Are you saying there's no value in the new domains?

I am not sure if even google can add any REAL value to names in that registry. I am mindful of the same talk when Apple bought Mobile.Me years ago

Of course. Besides that, I think the demand for .XYZ will increase. At least me will follow the auctions at NameJet the coming month.

Yes, it's a boon to people who don't mind ripping off people in the short term.

Another domain name that is going to receive a lot of inquiries this week:

When most of the world hears abc.xyz (if they ever do), these will be typed into browsers:
  • abcxyz.com (does not resolve)
  • abc.xyz.com (the .XYZ registry redirects it to the correct abc.xyz)
  • abc xyz.com (depending on the browser and ISP, it will lead to nothing, ads, or a search engine)
  • abc.xyz (correct, and the last thing most people will try)

Not true Google has enough money to help people understand ABC.XYZ and in the short run this will also help all new gTLDS. :xf.wink:

.xyz is the big winner and new .xyz regs are high today!

How about reading, do they have enough money to teach people that?

"The goal isn’t to make Alphabet a consumer brand, Page said."

They have no reason to get people to learn abc.xyz because of all the confusion that comes with it. And, there is nothing there for the people.

Did they have enough money for people to understand Buzz or Froogle, or Google Plus which is falling apart or their failed affiliate network etc. Nope.

Google has the ability to help people understand the new gTLDs, but it's a matter of whether they want to do it and when.

I hope they do, but I don't think that abc.xyz is going to make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. More likely, they'd switch Google.com (and maybe their other products) to one of their new gTLDs like search.google, youtube.google, gmail.google, or something.

We're probably a long way away from that, but who knows, it's Google!

You crack me up JB, the sky could really be falling and you'd say it wasn't. Do you actually think the site will remain as is?

Quote, I did read: "Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc. as the publicly-traded entity and all shares of Google will automatically convert into the same number of shares of Alphabet, with all of the same rights."

This will be their new investor site, ABC.XYZ but not replacing Google search.

This is good news for .xyz, I knew when I read the headlines tonight you'd be in here being Debbie Downer.

You've posted over and over large corporations would never use new gTLDS, especially .xyz, you've been proven wrong. Google is a giant, period.

Take three asprins and call me in the morning. :xf.smile:

Actually, Google.com is still using Google.com. If I went to Google.com and it forwarded to abc.xyz, then, like I said, it would be something. I also pointed out in previous posts the difference between companies using their .brand and new gtlds that you guys can register, there is a difference. That Barclays is using their brand, what does that have to do with you and the extensions you've wasted money on?

You and some others still haven't explained, how in the world is this supposed to help "other new gtlds"? Some parent site that the public will probably never visit, will help .click, .blue, .photos etc.? Flesh those thoughts out, connect the dots for me. Something deeper than the fluff that usually gets posted.

Everyone excited about this might want to know that Google was a founder and board member of .mobi, investing €600k to create the Dotmobi company..
I was going to post about .mobi too, because it was promoted and advertised much more prominently than the new extensions are today. Some end users really did take a chance back then.

Some comments are hilarious.
I understand those who invested heavily in new extensions are desperate, thus the news like these are blown up out of all proportion. But that still doesn't mean their 'assets' will sell at all. Sorry.
In this instance, this was another registry sale, not a domainer success story.

Since google is (again) involved in new extensions, they must be now using them in some way, but it would make more sense if they used their own.

Ps. Just checked my e-mail. Two requests for .XYZ domains I have and I have not sold a .XYZ in more than 3 months. ;)

Great news!

Both for .XYZ / Negari but also for the new gTLDs in general.

I had a plan to lower the prices on my own .XYZ. but will no longer do so. I will watch the .XYZ auctions on NameJet more closely now.

Larry Page says on abc.xyz: "Don’t worry, we’re still getting used to the name too!"

There's an Easter egg in Larry Page's letter that links to hooli.xyz

I'm going now to register a ton of .xyz names!

World's most powerful internet company are using a .XYZ for their parent company and this will not be a boost for .XYZ and gTLDs in general?

Of course it will. This is just the beginning.

Data will show...

Vesna Vulovic fell 10,160 m (33,333 ft) in 1972 without a parachute and survived.

Does this mean we should open the plane's door, while in air, the next time we feel like getting off early?

You know the 4 CHR .xyz is on demand. I found on sedo, godaday & flippa Min value is $99 to $xxxx each .xyz BIN price....
Asking price means nothing. It's the sales that determine market value. Not wishful thinking.

Godaddy allow only few domains for auction listing and .xyz one of them....
Along with thriving TLDs such as .name .mobi .asia or .com.bz... not sure what your point is ?
