We have supported the idea that domain names influence search engine performance for some time now โ€“ the research is there.

New top-level domains create a more meaningful and memorable experience for Internet users. Having a unique and relevant URL that matches your brand name or product is priceless. The name says it all. The best way to get discovered online is to use a domain name that aligns with your purpose and makes it easier for people to find you.

The top apps on the market are already using the .app domain as the home for their application on the web. There are more than 1.5 million app publishers between Google Play, App Store, and Amazon AppStore, which means there are 1.5 million brands competing for the perfect representation of their brand with the .app domain (Source: App Annie).

disclaimer: I own diamondring.app

I noticed quite a few too with the same name or same 'last names' where the only difference is just the owner brand name as 'first name'.

Google owns Android
Google owns .app
Google owns Google search

Anyone who can't figure out how this is going to work isn't too bright and should keep blogging for ad revenue

I think if you are interested in developing a non-ecosystem app with HTML 5, then you could monitize it without giving anything to Google or Apple, yet it will run in any mobile browser. Also if you wanted to review apps under a given topic, then a search for xxxx.app could organically give nice search results, allowing you to have related content links to drive traffic to.

If you look at the big picture, what does Google want? Does it want to undermine the popularity of AppStore apps? Does it want to undermine the popularity of iPhones? Not that a lot of people know of this, but this was Microsoftโ€™s plan. You didnโ€™t need to host your Windows โ€œStoreโ€ app in the Windows store, you could host it privately. This was for intranet use as well. Too bad the Windows phone bombed, it was a great mobile OS with a killer strategy. I had over a hundred Store app names reserved. Somebody at Microsoft had basketball dreams and let the Windows phone slip from greatness. Gartner had predicted it to outsell the iPhone.

If history is any indication Google will rank your .app domain provided you follow their framework, just like any other website... perhaps prioritise it on mobile devices

More broadly, there are issues of potential conflict of interest when major search engine companies own any domain extensions. I am not saying they will act in a way that is conflicted, and Google have in almost everything impressed me with their business ethics, but it was a worry I had well before reading this thread.

I wonder what Apple think of all this? Google own .APP, but the app universe is roughly equally split between iOS and Android. Will APP somehow serve Android better?

It is really hard to predict .app domain demand, as it is a case-sensitive domain aimed at the end-user developer. For domainers, yes, it has a very low value.

If the world is going to a browser based client user model, independent of operating system, then owning .app would be very advantageous. It could errode Appleโ€™s AppStore and more so it could errode Microsoftโ€™s OS dominance. As I type this today, Windows 10 updates have for the second time in a week, deleted security settings in a program called Calyx Point that I support as an independent IT contractor. The owner of the business that relies on this program has no choice but to keep running Windows because his business programs are only developed for Windows. Under a browser based client user model, it wouldnโ€™t matter what OS your are running, your programs run in the browser. Does anyone use Office 365 in the browser? Why do you think MS invested so much in making sure it still had the best office suite whether you were using the desktop version or the browser version. Once the developers of business programs offer browser based versions of their software, Microsoft desktop dominance will fade and the .app extension will become more important. There will be security features, more than โ€œhttpsโ€ that will make .app important. To compare it to other domain extensions is relevant today because the world doesnโ€™t use a browser based user model yet. Building a portfolio of .app domains might be best as a long term strategy. If you need any examples of how the browser based user model is evolving, just look at QuickBooks, you can run it in a browser now.

i see .app as a future thing with great potential but i may be wrong but that won't stop me from owning a few good names.
Going with my guts.

Examples of developed websites running on very expensive premium .app domains:

$2k renewal

art

$900 renewal

at
cash
menu
pair
rj
wz

That said, .app end users are nothing different than legacy gtld/ngtld end users, in the sense they don't mind to pay premium for .app domains. It means there will be .app market as well, like we have gtld/ngtld markets now.

It is impressive how rapid real world use is taking place for .app. When I checked almost two days ago there were already about 1600 app websites in active use. I see that as of today 19 are already in the Alexa top 1M, which is not yet very high (not quite 100 place) even among ngTLDs, but considering how little time .app has been in general availability it is significant.

In many ways I think the closest parallel to .app is probably .club, but .app has a better defined audience, plus the Google advantages. Club, now at its 4th anniversary, had a clear purpose, was promoted pretty well, has (compared to other ngTLD) good end use stats, and has sold at least moderately well in premium. I think app will do somewhat better.

I wish I owned a few good ones :'(

I wonder what Apple ๐ŸŽ has to say about .App extension.

Yes, I suspect they have some regrets they did not outbid Google for the #APP extension, seeing the early success.

Nevertheless, if APP makes the overall app ecosystem more active, valued and secure, it may have some positive indirect benefits for the AppStore and Apple.

A good news my friend sold the chainit.com for $170000, and he bought more than 500 .app domains.

So it's a good ideal to hold one .app domain.
