GoDaddyGoDaddy
A warning to customers having their domains registered through GoDaddy.

GoDaddy customers have reported serious issues with their domain assets being silently removed from their registrar accounts without any notification. These domains are then transferred to a GoDaddy holding account, effectively changing ownership. If customers are unaware of this, the domains will remain removed and invisible to the registrant until they notice themselves, and contact GoDaddy to restore the domains to their accounts.

We've seen similar practices at domain registrar Epik.com, where customer domains were also quietly transferred to corporate holding accounts, leading to major issues with lost domains. Your domain assets should never leave your GoDaddy account, unless they have been paid for and sold in the aftermarket. At most, GoDaddy can just mark them as e.g. "pending sale" but beyond that, they don't have permission to remove your domains from your account.

This issue, which has been reported before by Domain Name Wire and by several members of this forum, is attributed to a glitch involving aftermarket domains placed in a cart through one of GoDaddy/Afternic's partner registrars, resulting in significant concerns about domain ownership, possible missed renewals, and possibly even denial of service for the visibility of listed domains on the aftermarket.

If GoDaddy will not resolve this serious issue promptly, despite the repeated attention from DNW and discussions on this forum, registrants may escalate this matter to ICANN to address policy violations.

Domain registrants with GoDaddy are urgently advised to thoroughly check their accounts for any missing domains. In general, regardless of the registrar used, it's always recommended to maintain an offline "master" list of all your domain assets.

More details can be read in this ongoing thread.

If so, you should ask DNW to correct the 2023 article about this same issue. In that article it says that the domains are moved out of the GoDaddy account into a "special account". It appears that info came from a GoDaddy rep. Thank you.

From the DNW article:

Thanks for finally looking into this matter @GoDaddy, and also for your additional clarification.

As you know, DNW wrote an article about the same issue earlier (2023). Other members had reported the issue to GoDaddy as well. It's unfortunate that no action took place earlier to resolve this issue permanently. But if it gets resolved, we can move on.

The DNW article mentioned that the domains are moved out of the GoDaddy account into a "special account". It's not something I came up with myself.

I'd like to thank this community once again for providing more details.

Yo @GoDaddy the annoying "welcome to afternic dashboard" popup that pops up EVERY DAY has now decided to not listen to my first hit of the X, and then keep popping up even when you hit the X button a second time. Rinse and repeat.

Can you please take some of the top notch devs working on the boost feature away to get some of this super basic front end stuff working properly 🙏

@GoDaddy I'm unable to pay for domains won in auction. In the last stage of the payment process, I press Pay as usual, but then it just says that my shopping cart is empty. I've tried for two days now, but even after clearing history and cache it just won't work.

@DrJacoby same thing here today. Happening with Mastercard. I don;t have a VISA payment option, you could try if you do. PayPal works though if you have that option for now. (or should work)

Thanks, but I only have Mastercard.

It's healthy to question the accuracy of GoDaddy information even when given in good faith. For example, I've reached out to Premier Services support when I noticed that names that I'd attempted to register and had completed payment for were still showing as available for general registration quite a bit later. I've had two reps (neither my primary contact) tell me not to worry because those names are held at the registry level in these cases and cannot be registered.

With the first rep (who was very good), I told him that I believed that I could register them and asked if he wanted me to try. I registered them at Dynadot while on the line with him. He appreciated the real world feedback that contradicted what his techs were telling him. He cared enough even to follow up the next day. Top notch.

The second rep, for a different incident, called back after the names had finally made it to my account. He told me too that I need not worry because even though the names show as available, they really aren't. He believed his techs. I believed my actual experience with this.

The names are invisible in these cases. That's not a good experience for the user and it doesn't sit right. Maybe the name has moved accounts. Maybe it hasn't. I don't know. I do believe that you are accurately reporting what you have been told.

Hopefully @GoDaddy can see this and chime in.

Your description of the internal disorganization at GoDaddy aligns closely with what a GoDaddy representative recently shared with a forum member, expressing similar frustrations:

I managed to solve the problem by changing currency from my local currency to USD.

GoDaddy's Bulk Search is failing at the moment for me. Operational excellence.

We couldn't perform your search. Try again later.

It's been like that for a few weeks.

I can initiate a thread with things that are still functioning well.

Let me know if this is needed.

It's been like that for a few weeks.

It was working for me for a while today but the "try again later" message is not uncommon. I was able to use it quite a bit yesterday. When a GoDaddy feature works, especially availability searches, it often feels like a pleasant surprise.

I shifted activity to https://www.dynadot.com/domain/bulk-search

Dynadot's bulk search works. Not a surprise.

What's Dynadot's max search limit? Right now I'm using Namecheap, 5,000 domains max. They are not perfect by any means but it works, in contrast to GoDaddy.

I believe that Dynadot's standard limit is 1,000. It's 2,000 for me when I'm logged in.

The 1,000 limit is what I see when I'm not logged in.
